Leakless water pump that leaks

The packing nut on my water pump shaft keeps magically loosening allowing for leaks. Is this to be expected, thus a "pre or post drive" checklist item? I've thought of safety wiring it but thought seeking the wisdom of you folks first might provide the real solution and or culprit.

How long have you had the leakless water pump on the car?

it seems strange that it would loosen because the shaft turns in the direction of tightening it. Perhaps it's time to replace that rear bushing an shaft.

Or, apparently they now sell a leakless packing nut. Doesn't look totally original, but might make your life happier!

I bought the car two months ago. The previous owner had passed away so I have no idea how long the pump has been installed. The vehicle was a total frame up restoration about twelve years ago. The previous owner kept it in first rate condition but no maintenance records came with the sale.

if I understand you correctly, the leaking stops when the packing nut is tight, but leaks after it loosens. Leakless pumps use a variety of seals that do not crush with the packing nut, like packing does. Assuming you have an O ring or lipped neoprene seal behind the nut, I suspect the nut merely holds the seal in place. Suppose you put an adhesive sealant like RTV or a thick one like teflon pipe dope on the threads to hold the nut in place? Some leakless pumps have a ceramic or neoprene seal behind the rear bushing. I can't see how the packing nut would affect them. In the long run, or maybe even short, you are probably looking at getting a rebuilt pump.

Before I replaced my pump recently, it leaked a steady drip and it had nothing to do
with the packing nut. It, too, was leakless and the nut was sealed and you couldn't
get it loose with a pipe wrench, let alone a packing nut wrench. I tried before I realized that it wsn't supposed to come off. The so called leakless was on the car
for eight years before it started leaking. Snyder's sells two kinds of leakless pumps
in addition to the old style. You might want to give them a call and discuss your
particular problem. They're pretty helpful. JMHO

I also have a leakless w/p with 14,000 miles on it and last month the day before our three day tour it started to leak so much that it could not go on the tour.
After throwing the cat out by the tail and kicking the dog (DON'T have either one) I removed the packing from a recent rebult B pump and put it in the A. It has not leaked now for about 1,500 miles. I don't know what style leakless pump I have, but it was purchased from Bratton's about 2 years ago.
