I have pretty heavy oil leak from the point shown in the picture with arrow right at the edge of oil pan and I think gear box. Any recommendation what should be the fix ?

I'm still learning so please more details.

That cover needs to be removed, everything cleaned and look again.

Could be oil pan gasket, rear main or camshaft.

Is any oil dripping from of the large cotter pin on the bottom of the clutch housing? This would show if it is coming from the rear main or cam.

I agree with Patrick. "That cover needs to be removed, everything cleaned and look again.

Could be also coming from the valve cover/oil return pipe also.

After cleaning consider using some flourescent dye and an ultraviolet light to trace the leak. https://www.amazon.com/Interdynamic...ems-Ounce/dp/B002M4G24U/?tag=atomicindus08-20 It works better in the dark.

@Patrick , @Ruth, which cover needs to be removed ? Do you mean engine oil pan ? Any pointers how to remove this cover ?

The cover looks like this.....so you can see the approximate bolt locations

This may help, had a big leak that turned out to be lack of gasket between enging block and flywheel housing. That gasket covers the camshaft opening at the rear of the engine block, without it oil just pours out.

It seems to me that if it's the cam, the oil would be coming from the rear pan gasket area, not the cotter pin since it would be leaking OUTSIDE of the flywheel cover. Then again, it could leak INTO the flywheel cover then out the cotter pin hole ????

There does appear to be an oil track down the flywheel housing in your first picture. The small semi-circular metal plate should have three small bolts holding it in place - you’ll need a 7/16” wrench for those. Once you remove that, get a good flashlight and check the cork seal between the rear center of the oil plan and the rear main bearing cap. If it’s broken or completely missing, you’ll need to remove the oil pan to replace it. Reach inside with your hand and see if you can feel oil on the inside wall of the flywheel housing. If so, rear main bearing may be leaking.

Two other places, as others have mentioned can cause a leak like you pic shows - valve cover gasket and oil return tube - both are on the passenger side of the engine behind the manifolds and carburetor - again, use a good flashlight and check carefully.

The other place to look is at the junction between the rear of the engine block and flywheel housing. Post 11 shows a good pic of the rear of the block where another gasket goes. It may be missing, or installed backwards - again, you may be able to see the edge of the gasket with a good flashlight. The camshaft boss (shown in post 11) is on the passenger side of the block - if you see the portion of this gasket sticking out on the driver side, it’s been installed backwards and will cause a leak like yours.

If you determine that gaskets are intact and not leaking, the rear main bearing may be leaking and will need to be adjusted.

The Model A engine does not have an oil seal at the rear main bearing - just a slinger on the crankshaft. All Model A engines leak a little oil - typically a few drops, but your leak does not look normal to me.

Keep us posted on what your find.

You didn't mention what level you fill the crankcase to. My car and others that I am familiar with leak excessively if filled to full on the dipstick. Most seek and stabilize at a level half way between add and full.

Yes full to dipstick. Do you think it could explain this leaking ?

I removed flywheel housing. What should I look for ? Pictures attached.

I agree with post 15. My new engine started dripping for a while and after leaking about a half a quart it stopped. Problem solved.

The part being held on w/the 2 castellated nuts is the rear main bearing cap.
Wipe everything down and start the engine and let it idle, then watch to see if you can spot where the oil is coming from.
