Late model transmission input shaft bearing retainer

Just read that the transmission input shaft bearing retainer on a late model 4 speed is to big tofit a 52-53 Ford cast bellhousing. My question is can the retainer be machined to fit the bellhousing rather than machining the bellhousing. Has anyone had experiance with this?

I think it just depends on the size differences., but certainly possible. On my car I used an aftermarket bell housing from M.E.C. to put the 4 spd toploader to my flathead.

Thanks Kahuna. Not much has to come off the retainer for clearance. Did not want to mess with original bellhousing (especially cast iron). Input bearing retainers are easier to come by.
