Last but not least, another problem Sorry

Well the old T seems to be doing good after numerous carb cleanings and a rebuild new wiring harnesses and cutoff switches and so on. There's one more problem that gets my goat. After running the car all around town and stopping for some gas at the local station. I filled up an proceeded to start the car. NO SUCH LUCK!! The car was warm everything was just running perfect!! I cant seem to figure this out. I can eventually get it started by setting the throttle at full and retarding the timing. If I run the car shut it down and immediately hit the start button it will fire up and run but if I try to start it after five or ten minutes no such luck. Could the carb be draining itself out running back through the line? I doubt it after a full tank of gas it would take quiet a bit of pressure to push it back. The only other idea I can think of is flooding out. I have upgraded the the needle valve to the neoprene one. I guess the float could be set too high.

Thanks/sorry!

This sounds a bit like vapor lock. The gas line may be too close to the exhaust pipe & when you stop & there is no cooling air passing by the area, the line becomes hot enough to boil the gas & cause the condition. Often re-routing the gas line can cure the problem.

(I hate to break the news but if you play with old cars there never will be a last problem!!)

You should always open the throttle about half way and retard the timing every time you start it- warm or cold.

Some cars/carbs need a quick pull on the choke even when hot. Gas can't be pulled back into the tank, it's uphill and if the bowl is full the valve would be shut. If the carb was leaking you would see a puddle under it. Ditto on fully retarding the spark to start on battery any time for starting, if on magneto can advance it maybe 4 notches.

Hello All,
Well I found a fuel line about a good centimeter away from the exhaust pipe!! Hmmm thats interesting. Fixed that up, and had a real expert find a few other problems with the fuel system and ignition system. Well I still have a lot to learn about Model T Fords and just engines in general but I guess nobody was born with the knowledge so in time I will be knowledgeable myself.

I really appreciate everyone's great information and prompt replies to my dumb little problems.

Jack,
You hit the nail right on the head with the problems thing, it is never ending but it's all fun!!

Thanks again everyone!!

Best Regards,

These vehicles are so damn old that they don't have new problems - just the same ones over and over! :D

That is the very reason I love the Model T. You will never stop learning. I enjoy the sound of my engine, you will learn how to change the spark timing by the sound of your engine, IE going up hills requires a slight retarding of the spark. Enjoy it! It's lots of fun. I have owned model T's since the early 1960's

You may also have a problem with the float valve sticking closed after the carb bowl fills up when the motor is stopped. My 14 sometimes is very difficult to start warm/hot. I gently tap the carb and away it goes!
