l pump modification

When opening the intake up on a C oil pump exposing more of the gear to the oil , Does one open it horizontally or verticle ? pump has a relief valve & am looking for more flow , Thanks.

Vertically. Making the intake wider will reduce flow due to increased leakage around the gears.
