Anyone hear have experience using the kwik way F series boring bar to bore out flathead V8s. I purchased one without a set up tool kit and am looking for one. I do not know exactly what it looks like yet but I have found a owners manual for it. I should have it in a few days. I was told this machine was made in the 30s or 40sand parts are hard to find for it .I'm now wondering if it was worth the purchase price of $600.00 without the tool kit. Any helpful info for this machine would be great. Hear are some photos of it.
Also I don't know how to make it feed down, I got it to retract back up after hand cranking it down. Any help or comments about the machine would be welcomed. Thanks John

Iv only seen one used once
So im no expert

There should be a plugged hole next to where the cutting tool go’s in and gets locked w the set screws.
A depth micrometer gets used in that hole to set the cutter
Cutter holder has a spring that push’s it out to the mic.

Did you try pulling the wheel crank in or out?

Man oh man John, I haven't seen one of those in ages. There was a machine shop here that used one of those but I had kinda forgotten about them. That particular machine shop closed up several years ago but I know the man that bought a fair amount of the equipment. I'll see if I can get in touch with him. He might be able to help.

Parts for that little beauty are next to imposable to locate. It is 60 to 70 years old.

That's real old machine. I use to use a later one, it's been about 20yr's now, mounted on a 2in. think table and the engine came up under the table. I've used a lot different bars in my 60yr. in machine shops. Quick Way-Van Norman- Storm Vulcum- Rotwell- I think Rotwell was the cady of boreing bars. I bored 90% of my engine for 18yrs on a CK-10 Sunnen automatic cyl hone. Since I've been retarded for 16yrs I bought and old Storm, You cain't bye anything for it except tool bits and it a single speed and have to crank it back up the hole but it bores right on the button and I'm in no hurry to go anywhere. a tool kit is going to cost a lot if you can find one. i have a newer kwik way bar and dont know if the tool kits are the same.if you join speed talk you could ask there and some one can probably help you.

You might check automotive machinery dealers. I sold a nice van norman 944S for 700 dollars a few years back with an extended took kit. I bought several of the small tool holders so I didn;t have to set all the cuts only the last one. There are allot of bars for sale nobody uses them any more, except us small guys. Automation has taken over. Thay might be able to set you up with enough parts to do a flathead.

Take the lever you pushed up to get the bar to come up and put it down one position
it should almost be level. Then grab the short chrome lever on the side and pull it up,
that should make the bar feed down. If just the wheel moves but not the bar turn the
little knob in the center of the wheel, either in or out and it should power down.
There is a stop/rod that is held by a set screw, this you set for travel for the bar.
It will move down with the bar and move that first lever you pushed up and shut the travel off. Then you push the lever up again and it goes up again.
Tool kits are on ebay all the time. You should be able to pick one up for $600-$1000
Get the whole kit and don't just buy the micrometer as you will need cutters and
bore setting fingers also.
If you have problems making it work P.M. me.
I have two of them I use all the time.

Maybe a little off topic. My understanding is that you get a more accurate relationship between the cylinders and the crankshaft if you bore off the main line versus the block surface where the boring bar mounts.

Thanks everyone I got it working with the help of posted info. it has 2 speeds fast and slow.. I assume the speed (fast) is for larger bore sizes and (slow) for smaller bore sizes????
the tool kit prices on e/pay are shocking to say the least. I was told this bar was used on ford flatheads by the previous owner but the tool kit could not be found. My intended use will be fore the same (flathead ford V8s. I think from looking at some of the photos of the tool kits there are bore centering pins for different bore sizes and I think the ones I have will do for what I will be using the bar for. may could machine up the hold down bar to fit into the flathead blocks if I had to. the set up micrometer will have to be something I will have to purchase for sure.
Your postings have helped me greatly... I want to Thank everyone for your help.John

I just noticed that the tool kit found by Dec 211975 for kwik way FW and FW2 has round centering pins. (same as my boring bar ) but in the manual I have for the f series the pins shown there are square. any ideas on why that would be my serial number on the machine is F4497.the manual I have for the model F states it covers serial #F2909 or higher. could it have a newer boring head from the model FW or FW2??
I have gotten some feed back from Kwik Way on this machine but it hasn't been much help. however I'm excited to see that some of you have here have seen these machines or used one in the past. so all the info I can get will help so very much. You guys are a big help... Thank you ..
