Knocking While Accelerating, Loose U-Joint?

I had someone re-time my stock A engine and there was way too much advance. Same symptoms as Sandburg is having. There was a loud knocking noise and letting off the gas while it was happening removed the knock immediately. Retiming the engine fixed the issue. I would keep looking at the FSI ignition with all the work you had done on the drive line components.

Try testing for a wrist pin or connecting rod knock by grounding out individual sparkplugs while the engine is running. The knock will disappear on the plug that is grounded if this is your problem. You might have to run at a slightly higher RPM than idle.

Good Morning...It has been mentioned several times that the timing is not correct for the way your engine is set up. Suggest that you remove the electronic FSI distributor and put in a stock one, check your timing at the same time. When going up hill or putting the throttle down hard...retard your timing with the left hand handle on the steering wheel...I do belive that the knocking will go away. I have had the same issue and I even checked with my engine builder and that was the advice I was given...Sometimes the way Henry built the A work best....Good Luck...Ernie in Arizona

Is the exhaust pipe hitting the passenger side rear motor mount under acceleration? Any marks on the pipe? Can you do the jiffy-pop test on it (a waud of tinfoil then recreate the sound and see if the foil is squashed)?

I have heard a timing gear knock when accelerating from a worn timing gear. Outside chance, but worth a look.

Dick M, if that needs checked, it is also worth ensuring that the little spring, and plunger that keeps the camshaft from walking forward is in place too.
