Kingpin questions please......

Hi all, I'm putting together my kingpins on the rebuild of my '39 1/2 Ton. A couple of questions please. On the lower bearing, what side goes up, the one with the seam? Also I'm replacing the bushings, and because I want to do the job right, I'm going to them reamed. What size ream do I tell my machine shop to use? Thanks for all the responses. Oh, any other tips?

John, The seam is on the bottom and put the shims under the lower bearing.Make sure that the bushings are installed in the spindle so that grease will pass thru. .812/.813 Dia. Make sure that the machinist will line ream the spindle so that the pin lines up going thru both. Slip fit-no shake. When assembling, shim the spindle a little tight and it will break in. Ken

Be sure that a sunnen hone is used, that the shop guy has the fixture that can go through both bushings at once... The fit you (I) want is tight, just so you can barely fit the pin in by hand... It will be loose enough soon enough... Karl

John, I'm restoring a 39. I had a local spring shop do my kingpins and press out my perch bolts. Like the guy's say, the spindle movement will be tight at first and they break in gradualy.

On my 39 I got my front springs from Posies. If your @ that stage in your build, check them out. Lot's of stuff for 38/39. My front spring's had worn down half way into the main leaf and I had 2 broken leafs as well. LOL:D
