On an ORIGINAL 36, the kingpins have sockets at the top for the mechanical brake cross-shafts, and which also carry the load; the bearing is between the top of the axle and the bottom of the socket. The "open" end of the bearing
goes downward. This is also true for 1932-1935's.
Starting in 1937, the bearing was moved to the bottom of the axle, so the load
is carried by the lower knuckle of the front spindle against the bearing, which in turn is against the bottom of the axle.
For those converting 32-36's to hydraulic brakes while retaining the original spindles, the un-used sockets can be eliminated by using a special thin thrust
bearing and plates between the bottom of the axle and the spindle, and then
using 37-41 (78-3111) kingpins that have been shortened at the bottom about
3/8" (so they do not protrude at the bottom of the spindle.)
