King Pin and Spindle Lock Bolt

I'm working on the front end of my parent's 29 model A. We have new king pins and had new bushings installed into the spindles. There is vertical play between the axle and the spindle. I have 2 thin shims and another thicker washer deally with a rolled shoulder. In order for everything to line up properly including the locking pin groove, the thicker part needs to be on the bottom and the shims on the top. However the weight will certainly crush the formed washer part. What is the proper method of shimming this? Also the new locking bolt is different than the original. It is smaller and has grooves in it. It doesn't exactly slide into the hole. Is this normal and does it need to be beaten in? Thanks.

Thanks Mitch that helped. I'm also trying to find out how the felt goes with the operating pin? Can't seem to find information on that?

The felt washer fits between the bottom of the kingpin and the ledge on the backing plate, and the push rod goes through the center. I put grease on the felt to help the push rod slide through the hole. I've had to slice the felt to half thickness to make it fit.

The link in Mitch's response shows the washer with the flange on it and the felt piece on the bottom left of the picture (items 5 and 6).

The 28 and 29 original kingpins had a couple different locking bolts which had a straight round shaft, rather than the later tapered locking pin. You can't mix and match these parts.

These are shown in the "Service Bulletins".

the brake operating pin felt is #30 in the picture. it goes on the backside of the backing plate. the picture is a little deceiving. i loosen the bolts up to install it.

Oh ok I see it now - thanks guys. It also appears I may need to put in brake shims to get the travel correct. Do you sometimes have to put in more than 1? Just not sure how many to order?
