Keeping it up...........trunklid

I have lost count of the number of times the trunklid on my 41 has decided to give me the chop.

Are replacement hinge springs available (and are they any good) or is there another method that I could consider?

I installed a pair of NOS spring struts on my '47; but they were borderline to being trustworthy. I saw a post where another guy added a small strut to keep the R/H strut over-center. Installed a strut and it works really great. Trunk lid firmly stays up and is still easily shut.

There is another post on here on the Barn; where it shows how to "wind" the spring tighter and weld a new stop on the arm.

I made a small J hook that I stuck between the spring and the arm, turn it 90 degrees and it keeps the support from folding. Not a fix but it works until we can get some new springs.

May I ask details on the strut? Looks promising.

The guy that got my 39 coupe off of me simply drilled a hole through both arms whilst in the up position and installs a pin!

Sure

The strut is:

Hood Lift Support Front Bonnet Gas Struts for VW T5 Transporter Caravelle 03-15.

That's a mouthful; but a google search brings the struts right up.

The base is mounted right in the corner of brace structure like in the picture (probably clearer in the picture on my original post as there is no trunk panel in place.

The eye is mounted on the arm at the dimension indicated the picture.

The guy I got the info from mounted his on the left side; I mounted mine on the right due to wiring on my left side.

He mounted his eye on the outward side of the lift arm; but for whatever reason mine didn't clear so I put it on the inward side.
