Hi from a newbie to to the site.
Being a family man with kids, I needed a 4 door car. So I bought one yesterday.
I picked up a 1950 Ford Sedan 4 door. It hasn't ran in 2 years and a needs a complete brake job. But it should fit my needs well.
I hope to learn allot from this site and members.

welcome, and as far as the brake job, rebuild every thing or replace, especially the brake lines, check front wheel bearings for stains, they get those from sitting in one place for a long, and pits, usually show up as metal flakes in the grease, replace as necessary, install new grease seals, and it goes with out needed to be said, check drums for roundness and to see if they are in specs if they need to be turned, this has nothing to do with the brake job but should be checked any way, oil generator and dist, put a lite coating of grease on dist cam, keep your eye on the water pumps they dont like to sit for a long time, they tend to start leaking, flush radiator and add a 50/50 mix of anti freeze, drain fuel tank, check for fuel getting into oil, fuel pumps dont like to sit for long spells either, the fuel pump diafram can dry out, crack and leak gas into the oil pan, ok you probably new all that so i will shut up, lol

Welcome to the Barn! Another source for you:

Good looking '50 you have there. Very solid and complete. I've had several 49' / 50' Fords, and the great thing about them is their conventional technologies. Very easy to work on with the open driveline and modern bendix brakes. Keep us appraised of your progress. We like photos

Thanks for the complements.
This is not my first old car. But it is my oldest.
I have a 65 Mustang and a 65 Fairlane 500 station wagon. I sold both my 60 Falcon 2 door wagon and my 1950 F2 a few months back.
This is my first shoebox.
This will also be my first 6 to 12 volt conversion. Should be fun.

don t brother with a 6 to 12 volt converation it is more troble than it is worth goodluk.

Why would you want to switch to 12 volt?
The 12 volt is not an upgrade, but is a lot of work that is not necessary.
The only reason Detroit changed was it was cheaper to use smaller wire.
My opinion.

Works good
Lasts long time

The more I dig into the car, the more I find the wiring to be bad. If I'm going to take the time to re-wire the whole thing, might as well set it up for 12 volt for future mods/accessories. I have nothing against a 6 volt system, just planning for the future.
Now for a dumb question....
This car also has an overdrive, the pull knob is pushed all the way in. Am I in high, or low?

Thanks

I would put in a new wiring harness and get an inverter for 12v accessories. that's what I did to my '50. I use a GPS and a satellite radio, plus phone chargers in mine.
When the cable is in, it is in the overdrive mode, which means that when you get above about 27 mph, you can let up on the gas pedal momentarily for it to engage, if the electrical system is okay. To disengage the OD, you push the pedal all the way down activate the kick down switch and bring it back to standard gearing. It will free wheel anytime you let up on the gas pedal when below 27 mph or if the electrical system has a defect.

What are the dates for the "Back to the fifties" ?
I'm hoping to have it road ready within a month or two. All depends on the condition of the flathead.

Hi Otto:
Welcome to the board, loads of good info here & good folks to talk with. That is a very nice start to a nice car. They don't call them mor doors for nothing looks like you have a load of accessories there. Might be a nice survivor if you just get it roadworthy & drive it as is. However it's your car & your funds so fix it up to your likings. The only ones you need to please is your bride your self & family. You probably already know that.
