I All my name is Allan Lobley & I live in Queensland Australia .
I have a few questions about a engine that I want to rebuild .
1. can any one tell me the advantages / disadvantages of a early 5 bearing cam block , as the block I have has good main bearings still with the shims & correct clearance but will have to be bored for new pistons as the bores are tapered.
2. has any one had any dealings with www. Old Timer Babbitt.com , as I would like to get a set of there rebabbited rods for this engine , the cost of these to me with shiping is going to be less the sending mine to the US on a exchange bases .
Thanks Allan.

Allan, I can't answer your questions, but I want to welcome you to the forum. I'm sure someone will be able to help.

The main disadvantage is the rear main bearing web is weaker. I've seen 28 engines with hairline cracks in the rear of the block above the main bearing. be sure to check this area after thorough cleaning. It may never give a problem. Good luck.

I have used one set of their rods

I recently completed insert mains for a young man (16) who is rebuilding a Tudor. His rods were shot...I suggested he purchase a set from one of the major suppliers but he purchased them from the source you name. The rods looked very well done. The fit was right on. The engine was put on my break-in stand and run in with no problems. I can not speak as to the longevity of his work (rod babbitt but I do not expect any problems.

As Purdy said, the early block is weaker. The real early 28's had no reinforcement ribs to the rear main, later 5-bearing blocks had 2 ribs so were probably stronger. Generally speaking, the later the block, the stronger. The early rear cap was thinner but I think made of steel as opposed to iron on the later ones, as to strength of these, I have no idea.

Thankyou to all that answered my questions , I will check the rear for cracks at work as we can do crack ckecking , this engine will by a spare & go into my 30 while I get inserts fitted to it ( been told about a month wait ).
