Jim Mason's site seems to be down

Odd fellow in my opinion. He stated a short while ago that the renewal of his hosting site was coming up and he was thinking of taking it down. Fellow model Aer's have offered to host the site and even donate to keep it up but he said no.
Alot of us have bookmarks to his site, even other sites bookmark his site.

It is his to do as he wishes I suppose but still a Great loss to us all.

Jim,

I know it is your site and you can do what you wish to your site but it is TRULY a BIG loss for all us in this hobby. The amount of thought and researsch that you put into it was FANTASTIC and wish you would reconsider.

I think your site, especially for those new in the hobby, will surly be missed. Those are the ones who have and would have benifeted the most.

It will be interesting as time marches on in this hobby as to just how many other sites will dissapear AND how many new ones will come on board all displaying a different view but still educating the restorer.

I wonder if it would be possible to post your work and data on an other site?

I surely would but that is up to you.

Thanks for your knowledge and your educational way to have informed all of us with your findings.

Your site will be missed in "A" BIG WAY!

MIKE...What makes Mr. Mason an "Odd fellow"?

Jim,

Besides myself, I'm sure there's many others who would appreciate you taking up Steve's offer to post your data on his site. ( that's the way I interpreted it). I've had your site bookmarked for several years and felt a certain bit comfort knowing I could refer to it when necessary. Your carb tips are still available for some reason (thank you computer gods) so I've been printing as much as I can. Hope you don't mind. Thanks for your time and supporting this "learner" with your knowlege. Hope you reconsider. Best regards

Ditto with Steve, plus I would like to add, I consulted your sight before my purchase and many times after. I wish I had your knowledge and am grateful to you for sharing it.

Like everybody else here, I hate to see it go. There was a lot of good information on your site Jim, and there are a lot of us that will miss it! I particularly enjoyed your information about Japan black and how you came to duplicate it.

Thanks for all of the hard work you put into the site!

Just what makes him an "Odd fellow" ? Just because he removed his site?
Maybe a poor choice of words there.

Wow! That would totally be a shame to let all that knowledge disappear into the ether! I had some questions this morning about Zenith carburator tuning and was referencing info on that site and bookmarked it for future use. shame.

Since there are a lot of you asking me why I think he is odd I'll tell you but first remember it is MY opinion like I first said and it is not fact.

Jim Mason spent A LOT of time putting together the information he had on his site. It had been hosted on I think, three different providers. I know I had to change the bookmarks a couple of times.

Thousands of people have saved countless hours of work and made countless of changes based on the information on his site. Information like the homemade tools section could be found nowhere else. Commercial sites like Model-A.org have a page dedicated to his site and on a side bar another link. Don't believe me? Type "Jim Mason model A" and see what shows up.

So we now have confirmed that his was one of the top 10 or maybe top 5 sites for Model A information. It has helped thousands. Dozens, the last time he took the site down, have offered to host the site free, have offered to donate money, have given him names of sites that cost nothing to put the information up. If the site were to never updated again and never have a single piece of new information put on it it would have still been a valuable resource that would stand up to time.

So yes, I think a person would have to be a little odd to take away such a resource.

JIM, WHILE I'M SURE YOU KNOW OTHERS THANK YOU, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THE TIME YOU DID HAVE IT UP!!!

And as I said in the first place it is your information to do with as you please.

I hope you continue to post here, and I invite you to email me if you want to blast me off the board.

It's Jim's collection of information to do with what he pleases. Why should he be obligated to keep it online? It's hardly fair to label him as odd because he chooses to remove it or not take someone up on "free" hosting. I am sure there is more going on behind the scenes (again). Thanks Jim for the valuable information you have shared.

What a loss to our hobby. I too had Jim's site bookmarked and viewed it often. Plus, I'll miss seeing the pictures of my Tudor on his site!

Thanks for the compliments on the site. I have no trouble with people thinking I'm odd...I probably am. I do know about free sites, and thanks for the offers to host...but no thanks.
I started the site back in 2002 to learn html, it took on a life of it's own and grew to what it was. I soon learned that the second you put up a site, some people start attacking you. 'you don't know what you are talking about' 'your information isn't correct' 'you should or shouldn't do this or that'. Some become demanding. 'if you had any guts you'd post really interesting informtion like my hot rod' 'i'm rebuilding a rear end and need a step by step..could you have it done by next week?' 'i asked you to do a simple task of a step by step and you didn't..you stuck up *&^%(&%^' It all becomes tiresome. I also became tired of being told 'you don't know how to have fun'. 'if you really want to have fun you should forget all the nit picky stuff and just drive'. I started in Model A's in 1964. I orginially just rebuilt them with odds and end of several cars, rick packs and J.C whitney and other repop parts. I would hate to have one of those cars now. I learned that for me the 'fun' was in the originality. Learning the minutia. Fine point. I did the site for me...not for the hobby, not for celebrity, not for others. Over the past 4 years or so, all I got back from the site was irritation. So it's gone. Odd is one of the more polite things i've been called due to the site.
btw, the carb information is available on Model-a.org...fwiw,jm

Jim you could have someone put the information up on there own site or even a new one and your name and the aggravation that went with it would be off your back.

While you created the site " ... for me...not for the hobby, not for celebrity, not for others." it has grown to a source of information that is now above the mortal man and has a life of it's own for the greater good! Didn't work did it?:o

I (and I'm sure others) would also be willing to pay for a DVD copy of the information you had on the site or just the pictures.

Didn't say he was, anyone could use the information and repost it to a site if that is what Jim would allow.

It's hardly fair to label him as odd because he chooses to remove it or not take someone up on "free" hosting.

I gave my opinion as to why and it is my opinion. So yes, I think a person would have to be a little odd to take away such a resource.

I am sure there is more going on behind the scenes (again).

The information could be put up for all to use without a singe mention of Jim or his contact information.

Thanks Jim for the valuable information you have shared.

I agree 100% So we now have confirmed that his was one of the top 10 or maybe top 5 sites for Model A information.

I would be happy to host the info on my site and never link any of it to Jim but could give him proper credit.

How about it Jim?

Thank you Jim for stating the facts. Can not find fault with your reason for dropping your site. I never did like people that find fault with yours or other sites instead of learning the information that you went to the trouble to print for everyone to read and learn by. Good luck down the road. Mark.
