Jim Brierley update

Wow, it has been 10 days since I last posted a fan out. It took a lady from Bombay to finally get 'er done! Not sure where all of the emails went that we missed but as long as we are up all is good. Just talked to Kathy, Jim was able to have a shower today, and he got dressed. He had an appt with the doctor and was told he is doing well. The pneumonia is gone, the catheter is also gone, and they have him on less oxygen, so things are looking up. He has been in a wheel chair this week and went down to Rehab today. He was on some sort of bicycle that measures the amount of pressure from each leg and he was to keep them the same, he was riding for about 5 minutes and Kath said all considered he did pretty good. He was also standing with some help at the parallel bars to get his leg muscles going too. The attendents are going to get after him each day. He said as soon as he can transfer to the chair with confidence he will be able to go to rehab more often then when they come and get him. I was happy to hear there are some changes going on and he is getting more involved with rehab. We had a very well attended Hill Climb last Sunday in Murrietta. The weather was perfect, lots of cars and racers. We also had about 150 spectators, yeah, we made enough gate $$ to pay for the Port-o-pots! We also sold 16 more books that Jim wrote, and people signed up for FAST. Keep the cards and wishes coming, and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers, hugs.

Just spoke to Kathy, she said Jim had a busy day with visitors and phone calls. She took his laptop and he started deleting a bunch of old messages. They were looking for book orders and he found a question about a Cam that he sent a hit and lefthand peck message to the sender! Jim spent time in rehab this morning and again this afternoon. Kathy thinks they will spend more time at each session as he gets stronger. How many of you know that liver and onions is one of his favorite dinners! that's what he had today and was happy and cleaned his plate. Things are beginning to progress now that he is free from tubes and hookups finally. I think the thoughts and prayers are working, so don't stop, hugs.

Good news and wishing Jim well.

I'll bet it's the liver that did Jim in.:D
The last time I ate liver I must have been about 12.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Jim. We need you out on the salt setting banger records again. Here's to you. Get stronger and more fit every day.

Glad to hear Jim is getting better hope his is back to full health soon
(I need him back at work when he is ready)

Tom: Liver and onions cooked PROPERLY (NOT LIKE SHOE LEATHER) is delicious, with ketchup, French fries and a shake. Now I'm hungry.

Sunday Nov. 24, from Ron & Carol.

On our way home we dropped down to Hemet to see JimB. He was just getting his lunch so we visited with him and Kathy. He looks so much better, especially since he was dressed in shorts and T-shirt.He is getting used to being left handed but everything just takes longer to do. They are working him pretty good in the PT classes twice a day. The more he works out the more confidence he will get that he can do it. It will take some work to retrain his brain to use his right side. He continues to have company drop in which Kathy says is really good as he has to talk, he still is working to get his voice stronger. All for now, keep the thoughts and prayers coming.

Strokes happen every day and we are very lucky to live in a time where such medical advances and technology can aid in recovery. My grandmother had a massive stroke 2 1/2 years ago. The doctors said it's just like getting from Ft. Worth to Dallas. You can go the same way everyday for 60 years. But what if one morning, there was an accident and the highway was shut down. You then learn how to find your way there a different way. The brain learns and adapts to send neurons on a different path. Your body may never get 100% use to sending the neurons this way, which is why some people don't make a 100% recovery. But it sounds like Jim is on his way and doing his best. I wish him a full recovery!

Those of you who know Jim well enough to have his phone number should make every effort to call him, often. Believe it or not, its good therapy for him. Just dont be too discouraged after the first call or two.
One of my old racing buddies had a bad stroke, and though at first he could barely make a couple of sentences, and would get frustrated, he talked his way almost back to normal in a few months...although there are still a few pieces of the past he cant remember, he can still tell some of the old stories.
Good Luck with your recovery Jim.:)

Happy belated Thanksgiving to everyone.

Kathy and her mom went down to have dinner with Jim, and his son and girl friend showed up too. He has made some really good progress since I last wrote he has been working hard in the rehab gym, he walked the parallel bars scooting his right foot while the tech keeps his knee straight. He walked up and back. He also did some excercises with his right arm knocking over some cone on the table. He said he has to tell his arm and leg what they need to do, it doesn't just come. It is progress, I am really happy to hear that news.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, hugs.

I'm glad to hear Jim is steadily improving.

Can someone tell me where I can buy his book?

Hi everyone, Larry and I drove out to see JimB, wow, what a change! He
looks so much better! He was exercising his right arm with his left
and doing the same with his foot to his right leg. He said he used the
parallel bars again today and was able to walk and shuffle his right
leg up and back25 steps. I think he has made the turn to getting
better. His voice is stronger and he has exercises for that too, that
he needs to do each day to get the volume back. It was worth the trip
I'm so glad we went, maybe 3 weeks in a row, and today the biggest
change. Keep the thoughts and prayers coming, hugs.

I got my copy of Jims book a few days ago and have really enjoyed reading it . There is lots of good information for people that are interested in performance.

Just talked to Kathy and things are still on the up swing. He is still working on strengthening exercises. He goes to rehab even when he doesn't have an attendent with him. He and Kath went down and he got on the bike to workout. He knows it is important for him to be able to do things, some on his own when he goes home. He uses a kind of walker and the parallel bars too. The rehab technician said that he has 3 fellows about the same age that he is working with and that Jim is making the most progress. They both were happy to hear that and it gave him, a reason to do more. Not sure how much longer he will be staying there, but he had 100 days at the start, he is anxious to move back home. I told Kathy I would talk to her in a day or so, that's it for now. Keep the thoughts and prayers coming, hugs.
