January 30 cars

Ok. So I have the front eyebrow fenders. I also have the funny looking rear bumper cross brace now being shown in the new JS. I know some cars had an extra long cowl band. Did all very early 30 cars have this? What else do I need to find thats different on these cars? It's a two door sedan. I've heard that the strange rear cross brace takes special bumper braces but also heard that was only only the coupes/roadsters. Let me know guys. What am I missing?

This early stamped cross brace was spotted on a table at this years Hershey meet. The vendor wanted $250 just for the brace. It has the extra tab at the ends. Compare it to the other two stamped braces on the table. The bumper arms that go with this have the third hole for the tab.

My early 30 Cabriolet has the long cowl band. Another feature is the window regulators that are mounted to a piece of wood at the top of the door.

The JS also has two styles of tubular cross braces that also have three mounting holes. While I have not seen one of the January 30 tubular braces in person, I believe the difference between that one and the 28/29 brace is the notch at the corner to clear the riveted body bracket on the bumper arm.

The notch is only required for the Coupe / Roadster / Cabriolet to clear the vertical support bracket. The bumper arms were shortened approximately 1/2" for the 1930 models which moved the cross brace closer to the support bracket by the same amount.

here are some pictures of the bars mentioned
other features of early thirty cars
many have no dimples in the front fender where it goes over the front frame horns
the front cross member dosnt have a hole for the radiator drain
many have the 7 tooth steering column with the splined steering wheel
some of the coupe type cars dont have a bead all the way across the rea panel under the trunk?rumble lid it sops at the rear tire mount
the deflector on the bottom of the windshield is clipped like the 29s,not double notched, electric windshield wiper
the U shaped early 30 cross brace looks like someone manually cut the bottom edge with a hacksaw
all the ones ive seen are like this
the round one with the notch cut in the edge was to clear a rivet on the arm standoff ,like Marco stated,
I have a November 29 engine in my Briggs sport coupe,so I assume it was made in Dec 1929
I have the short cowl band ,it has the early fenders with the smooth fronts on the fenders ,(no dimples,no eyebrows) 7 tooth steering column with splined wheel, the unique rear bumper cross brace
I dont understand how Briggs made cabriolets with long cowl bands and eyebrow fenders and at the same time made sports coupes with different fenders and cowls
Briggs stamped the cowls

You know that's funny Stinch, i picked up that cross bar and knew what it was but i did not ask the price...[i know it was going to be high and did not need it at any price].I have a Jan. , 1930 Standard fordor [briggs] built somewhere in Nov. 1929 and no eyebrow fenders.Peter Grant from Conn. has a early 1930 standard Phaeton[restored] with eyebrows fenders . There's a 7 tooth steering wheel on ebay right know and it looks really nice [no cracks for a rubber wheel].. Price is $300.00 ...the last one sold on ebay n.o.s. sold for $550.00 or something very close to that.

I think that these are production changes and most were made independent of each other. Some like changing the cowl band and the cowl to the short band had to occur together. My unrestored Briggs Town Sedan has a Nov 29 number. It has eyebrow fenders, 2 bolt fender braces, long cowl band and 2 tooth steering. It has the round 29 style rear cross bar and the front frame cross member with no hole for the radiator overflow. It also has a number of other unusual features and maybe some I haven't noticed. The outer corners of the windshield frame ledge are not cut at an angle like the common 30 windshield. It has 5 matching stainless rimed hubcaps and stainless running board trim.

this is one design speedometer for the early 30s

It's a Northeast speedometer and requires a instrument panel with no notch for the trip reset. The speedometers seem more common than the panels.
