Jack bearing problem

I have bought an old jack, there is a ball bearing with loose balls that are gone.
I can buy new balls no problem, but how is the upper race secured to the lower race?
The spindel can be lifted if you pull it up and the balls will fall out.
My guess is there must be a coil spring or something over the spindel into the housing of the jack.
Someone knows?

Looks very similar to an AA jack but not, AA jack the bearing looks like a miniature throwout bearing and is stuck up in the "cone" gear piece - looks to be pressed in.

Are you sure your bearing didnt just separate when you whacked it apart and now the top or bottom is rusted stuck to something?

I did not whacking it apart, nothing is damaged and it came smoothly apart.
As you can see there is a bearing race in the housing and in the conegear.
The spindel is turned up and down by the gear.
The spindel has a locking pin at the underside which slots into the housing.
When i pull on the topside of the jack i can pull the spindel and gear up till the locking pin reaches te top.
It is just as i bought it,i have done nothing else as de-rusting it.
I feel there is something missing, but what?

Don't think so,if there were two bearings than still the bearing what is on now had to be locked up anyway

The only bearing that makes sense to me would be a bunch of balls held together by a tin retainer, very similar to the bicycle bearings on many bikes, only larger.

Is there a bearing store in your area? Luckily I have one 5 miles away.

yea the AA has the same locking pin - all that does is prevent the ajax thread rod from rotating so it forces the rod up VS just spinning. I dont think anything is missing - i think something got stuck and is now in 2 pieces...

Now that makes sense,it could be the housing was a bit longer and the conegear was pressed on.
I check tomorrow,if the housing shows any evidence of this i can make a new one.............i'll be back.

I know what you are saying, as my cast jacks have an enclosed bearing, but his gear and base sure look like the races are cast as part of it, and that's why I figure it must be a separate caged group of balls.

i see what your saying and it sure looks that way, in the first pic doesnt it look like the lower "race" is kinda sitting in the top? I see what looks like a collar or something down inside...

He might need to go over it with a dental pick and a maginfying glass to see if a seam can be seen. The AA jack is all loose (pick up the top the ajax thread comes up till it hits the stop) and this looks very similar so probably made by the same people.

Just checked the pictures, you can see the conegear shows on the bearingside that the inner ring has some damage,i'll think there was some kindn of bushing which was pressed into the housing..........tomorrow mesure it ,if so i put the gear in the lathe and turn it out, then i will turn a new on and press it in.

I could not solve the problem so i made a solution myself, bought the balls at a local pushbike shop, made a ring on the lathe and welded a piece of bend steel to it to retain the gear.
It works fine for me,gave it a lick of paint and it will do the job.

Well done René. I like the final picture. Being set on the dining room buffet with the fine china.:) Jeff

What is the steel rod with ring you added just above the gear that runs the thread up and down?

I guess it's welded at the bottom to hold the gear from moving up, right?
