It's just an engine - so why?

When I get up in the morning I really don't start moving till I had my couple cups of jo.

My car seems similar. Why when I start it, (she'll fire right up) does it run so rough? I'll drive her slow but she'll be missen and not runnin right. Once warmed up it prrs like a kitten.

Thanks Mart but if it were those things would it not continue after being warmed up?

This is in my 39 - with no choke

Walt my respect for you is so high - I just poured two cups in the tank:)

Your word is gospel on the barn.

Try pulling the choke out when it's cold, what does it do then? The choke is there to enrich the mixture when the engines cold. Should only need it for a short while, some want the choke in almost as soon as they start.
How long till it warms up and smooths out?
Marts correct, if yours is running a tad lean (weak) due to what he said, the engine would smooth out when warm, if its just a tad.
Martin.

I'll try the choke. Your right pretty much as soon as it's running I push in choke. I should have mentioned I have dual holly carbs and choke only one (the one closest to firewall)

Seem really to smooth out when temp hits 160

I think scooder and Mart have a good point.
I got to ask. In post #3 you state,,,"This is in my 39 - with no choke ".
But then you say you have a choke with dual holley carbs with one being choked. I also have dual holleys on mine and have both chokes hooked together. When I first start it in the morning, I pull the choke just a small amount and leave it on for the first 2 or 3 minutes of driving and then push it in. It starts right up and runs smooth and never stumbles. Just my thoughts and 2 cents.
Good luck with it.

Yes what I meant was choke pushed in/off. I start as you do but I guess I'm not leaving choke on long enough. I start with it on (slightly out) then as soon as I'm backed out of garage turn it off. Based on what I read I need to leave on for 2-3 minutes.

Do you think it's running on all 8 or is there a possibility of a plug fouling when cold. We had a similar problem , it would run rough ,but when warm a mile or so down the road would clear. We went to one grade hotter plug ,problem solved.

It sounds like it's running right. It shouldn't run right from a cold start without choke. Most do, but most are running a bit rich due to many reasons. If the mixture is right, it will not be rich enough to cold start. pumping the pedal will get 'er to fire, but it'll be a bit missy until warmed up.

Mart.
