isky max-1 valve clearance issues ?

Has anyone had valve clearance issues on the isky max-1 grind for the 49-53 ? Only mods are 4" crank and the isky cam. stock heads.

Had a reputable person build my motor. It sounds like a diesel. Has a nasty growl and valve clatter.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Can't remember what the net lift of a Max 1 is but .340 comes to mind. Hard to believe this would hit the head unless the heads were milled. Use a piece of solder to check valve/piston clearance.

Crane Cams, Reds Headers, Google these and this site and others for how to set valve clearances... One point I remember is that the commonly used techniques barely work on a stock cam, and not well at all on something fancy... Like, can't set both on one cyl at TDC firing position...

like ol ron is thinking, valve hitting head, no telling how many times a stock head has been milled, no matter what your going to have to pull the head and find the problem, look for marks on head above valves, set the head on with just a couple of head bolts loose just to hold the head in place with out a head gasket, turn engine over by hand, if head rises ,not enough clearance between head and valves, if that is the problem get new heads or have yours fly cut above the valves

i set the lifters at .014. make sure that the head is pushed toward the intale as far as possible before the head bolts are tightned. there are no locating dowels ,so there is some movement between the head bolts and the bosses in the head. you may still have to go at the heads with a die grinder

Don't you check thid before you bolt things together. A quick check would be to lay the head on the block with out a gasket and turn it over. But you can still use the solder it quick and works great.

I just had a brand new Isky cam that I bought that was ground WAY out of Spec. you might want to check to make sure its right too if your builder didnt check it already.
