Is this a model A generator, I need ro replace the cutout and the the few photos I have seen have what looks like a lug comming out of the case mine has 2 wires ?

Yes it is an A generator. I believe that it is a 30-31 that may have been rebuilt in the past and modified at the rebuilder.

Understanding that these things were often rebuilt useing mixed parts, It is either a 30-31 which has the cast iron back plate with the bushing instead of the 28-29's bearing, or it's a 32 that someone took the aluminum back plate off and put the model A plate on...........

I look at the generators at the ford garage site but not having access to a parts list it was not what I needed to id the generator. I guess i could remove it and try to find a part #. main question as the cut out on there is defective have to tap it to get it too work can I replace it with a standard model A.

Yes the cutouts should be the same A and B. I just rebuilt my spare and it is not that hard to convert it back to an 'A' style gen. with 'A' parts.

The back plate has post production brush holders, I can't tell from your photo if the end plate is cast iron or aluminum. The wiring can be easily changed to install a Model A type stud terminal with the ground wire terminated inside the generator case. The result would be a correct looking cutout installation.

Did some further checking using the a les andrews book. I had 7 volts at the battery terminal of the cut out, about 1 volt at the other size that connects to the 2 wires. I then tried the resistance test suggested in the book on the cut out and it tested good best I could tell from book.
Then disconnected battery while it was running and car shut down.
I am not very electrical but am I correct in guessing the the generator needs to be repaired, also no reading on amp gauge tried another amp gauge not from a model a but from a 49 plymouth still no read on meter

You have the later Model B generator. The grommet with two wires coming out and the beveled edge on the end plate are the signs of a "Model B" generator. One wire coming out is the field ground wire and is connected under the generator cutout mounting screw. The other wire is the generator output wire and goes to the input on the cutout. Either the B cutout with mounting holes, or the A cutout with open mounting feet is fine to use.

The output side of the cutout should read battery voltage, even with the engine off.
The input side of the cutout should read 0 volts with the engine off, and slightly more than battery voltage with the engine running about 600 or more RPM.

Thanks that helps so its a B generator , I had it on a fast idle and had maybe 1 volt. I did a lot of testing that I never did before mostly using the book so will recheck the reading at the input and if still low will have to replace the generator

Before replacing the generator first see if polarizing will fix it. You simple apply battery voltage to the generator output stud (or wire in your case) for one second, then see if you have charging. Check the running voltage on both sides of the cutout in case the cutout is bad. The voltage should be just over battery voltage on both terminals of the cutout with the engine at fast idle.

I had about 7 at the battery side of the cutout and a little less then 1 volt at the generator wire which is connected to the cutout. flashed it ( I also learned its close to the fan blade ) and no change still about 1 volt at the generator. Cut out is still questionable so does this tell me generator needs repair.

Yes, it sounds like the generator needs to be repaired.
