Introduction, and power steering question

Hi guys, I'm a newbie round these parts based over in the UK.
I have a 54 Lincoln Capri, running a 351W, C4 and '66 lincoln front discs (notice the Ford in a Ford- no GM bits thinking!).
Otherwise its stock, and thats where I hope you can all help out.
The steering box appears to leak, and its due a rebuild.
Does the whole steering column have to come out, to get the box out? If so does it come out into the cabin or is it engine out and then steering out?
Any help and advice you can lend would be gratefully received, as original 50's US car parts and advice are in short supply over here!
Many thanks guys,
Matt

Welcome Matt. If your Lincoln is the same as a Ford, the column comes out through the cab, but the inner shaft & box are removed from the engine compartment, as far as I know. If it has power steering, is there a ram connected to the drag link, like a Ford, or is the power in the box??

Thank you for the welcome and the advice Parklane....quick answer is I dont know, but will go take a look and get back onto the forum.
I am pretty sure that the power steering feeds the box direct, but can't be sure without looking. Having said that I saw someone on the HAMB talk about doing this on a 53 Lincoln and he had to take it all out through the cab, having first removed the seat! Looks like I'll be doing it in the drier weather later this year!
I am feeling like my brain couldn't short circuit that firefly in your tag line right now!
All the best.

On the 54 to 56 Ford passenger car, the steering gear box is removed by the following steps; remove the pitman arm and loosen the three bolts holding the gear box to the frame, remove the steering wheel and outer column inside the car, remove the carpet on the drivers side and locate the removable pieces near the column. The horn wire unplugs near the master cylinder. With the two floor pieces removed, move the seat all the way back, remove the three bolts holding the gear box to the frame and the gear box and shaft can be turned and pulled out into the cabin and removed. To install do the reverse.

Hey Ole Don,
thank you so much for a really clear explanation! That even sounds achievable too!
I won't have time for a week or two, but when its done, I'll post it up.
I knew I'd found the right forum right here.
If you've seen the pictures then you'll know its a work in progress, but it will one day be the ride I've wanted since I was kid. Metalflake roof and mild custom touches, sort of late 50's early 60's style.
I'll be using your collective knowledge over the coming years.
Thanks again.

Matt

Well Matt, I was almost correct. When I removed my steering box, the front clip was removed, so I guess I was partially right. ;):rolleyes:

Hey Parklane,
Yes you were right too.....Thank you both for your answers....think it'll be a later in the year job....I can live with the leak for now! lol.

Thanks a lot again guys.

Matt

Hey Matt, I love the Lincolns like yours, and I love the idea of a flaked roof mild custom. You will need a puller for the steering wheel, buy one. You may need a puller for the pitman arm, rent one.

Cheers Ole Don, sound advice...I will buy and rent accordingly...my neighbour is a mechanic, might borrow from him for a brew or two! May work out cheaper!
