Burner31,
Sorry I forgot to respond to your question about the tabs sticking out below the front bumper. Very observant of you.
Yes, they are tow bar attachments. When we retired, we sold our house and stuff and bought a motorhome and fulltimed in it for a few years. The most practical way for us to transport a car was to tow it flat on the ground. That was a modern car and we had no problems towing it around the country.
I kept the towbar when we sold the motorhome. so when we got the A, I wanted a way to transport it, either to participate in a tour that started far enough away from where we live, to make it practical, or for emergencies, where I needed to get the car home.
The tow bar I have is a Blue OX Aventi II. I bought the two brackets and bolted them to a 2 x 2 square steel bar and had 1/2 inch thick steel tabs welded to each end. Holes were drilled into the tabs, such that I could bolt this assembly to the same holes the bumper attached to and a second set of holes were drilled into the tabs just to the side, so the bumper could be attached to the tabs. All grade 8 bolts and 9/16 in diameter as the bumper bolts were.
When I test it, I was cautious and we hooked it up in the driveway and my wife moved the truck slowly and unfortunately, the wheels on the A started to turn sideways, instead of following the truck. At least we were cautious and watching carefully, so stopped immediately. Then walking along side, after straightening the wheels, we moved a bit more and as we entered the street and turned, the A's wheels turned sideways again. We drove around the block, with me sitting in the A and holding the steering wheel just inn case, and it worked fine for that, but at this point, I would never trust it to be towed flat on the ground. I can easily unbolt the tow bar bracket assembly as nothing is modified on the car, but then too, I might keep it on, in case of an emergency. If I had the tow bar with me on a tour, all I would need is someone that has a 2 inch receiver hitch to tow me a short distance to get the car to someplace safe, but I would stay in the car and monitor the steering, keeping my hands on the steering wheel while doing so.
