I just want to introduce myself to the forum after "lurking" for a couple of years. First I'd like to say that on this day in 1963 I was a U.S.Marine MP at Camp Pendleton, Ca. I took the detail down to 24 area, Which was Base HQ. at that time, to lower the flag to half mast. We had no TV, just personal radios. We heard all the news, including that in L.A. and many other places, cars with Texas plates were being vandlized.it was a crazy time, we were put on high alert, did'nt know if war was going to happen. After my discharge in 1966 I got seriously into cars. I liked to buy and sell cars, so I went through my Crown Victoria phase. Then into old Fords. I had a few that i restored (mostly just fixed up) I had a 1937 Club Cabriolet, a 1939 Standard sedan delivery, a 1941 Merc. coupe that I drove for about a year, then a 1951 Merc. 4 Door that was very low milage and a great car. I drove that one till my little Daughter almost fell out of the rear door. No car seats back then. Now I'm an old Codger and can't work on cars like I used to because of various health issues. I have a beautiful 1938 Standard two door sedan that i bought fully restored. I'd rather drive them now. It's washington blue, original type interior, '48 engine with Offy 4 bbl intake and heads, stock trans and other running gear. I love this car. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to say what wanted to. I get a lot from the forum and hope I can add some of my knowledge to the forum.

Welcome to the barn.
How 'bout puttin' your location in your profile so we can know where you're at?
I'm at that point too - rather drive an imperfect car any day than merely possess, look at, and show a perfect one. :)

I live in the central Oklahoma City area. Now in Tuttle, which is just SW of OKC. When i figure out how to post photo's i'll put up an avitar and of my 38 sedan.

Packy, good personal story about the JFK day. Crazy times I'm sure. Welcome to the Barn. Tell us More about that "38!!

Packy, Welcome to the Barn, and thank you for your service. You and I have a mutual appreciation of the '38 Ford, and coincidentally also, of Camp Pendleton during crisis situations. I was there a year and a month before you along with 1/3 of my unit for retraining, while the other 2/3 participated in the Cuban Blockade. While you performed your solemn duty of lowering the flag, I was a Newbie in the world of Civilians again. You are absolutely right, that day was the craziest in my memory, and I cannot imagine the emotional burden you bore to have performed Flag Duty on that fateful day. Yes, I do very much thank you for your service.

Hi Packy

Welcome to the barn.

I was picking up parts in south central Los Angeles.
It seemed everyone had lost a family member that day.

Bruce

Works good
Lasts long time

welcome to the 'Barn....yep, we love pics...lol....definitely know where i was that day....5th grade classroom.....Mike

More about my car. It's a pretty much stock looking '38 standard 2dr sedan. It's got a dropped front axil with "big and littles" so it has a california drop. It has regular 40's wheels but i think the fronts are v8 60's with '41 caps. It has stock rear end with 3:54 gears, 39 trans, 48 engine with 3/4 race cam (dont know which one) Offy 4bbl intake w/ 390cfm Holly carb and Offy heads. It runs and drive great and it is a joy to drive. I bought it off ebay in Ca. I flew out, checked out the car. I knew that i was going to buy it and made plans for money bank tranfer. I drove it home to OKC, with only trouble being the high altitude of Arizona and New Mexico on I-40 and the crappy gas which caused vapor lock a number of times. It's a great car. I have thought of installing a T-5 but with the 3:54 gears it will easily go 70mph. So i really cant justify the cost of that swap.

Ford38v8, I got out of boot camp and ITR early 1962 and straight to 1st Recon Bttn. When the Cuban crisis came along my unit was sent to Cuba but without me because i was 17 years old. they sent me over to base MPs which i liked and stayed there till July, 1964 when i went back to 1stMARDIV. Got out in april, '66.

Packy, Welcome to another MP. I served in the Canal Zone from May 53 till April 55. I was Army, Staff Sgt., not marine.

There is a world of information about the old Fords on this site. I am sort of a neophyte compared to a lot of the guys on the barn. I have only been fooling with old cars for about 33 years.

If you have a question, throw it out to the Barn. Someone on here will be able to answer it.

We all love pictures, lots of pictures.

Packy,

Welcome to the Barn! And I echo what the guys said, Thank you for your service to our country.

You will enjoy the Barn. LOTS of great folks here and a wealth of knowledge.

Kevin

Packy, so's there's no confusion, I was a SeaBee, not a Marine, but then, we identified with the Corp more than we identified with Swabbies anyway!

To post your pictures, open a new post, type something in, hit the Go Advanced button, then scroll down in Additional Options and hit the Manage Attachments button.
In the pop-up window, hit Choose File, then from your computer pop up, highlight a picture, then hit Choose.
Back at the previous pop up, hit the Upload button and you're good to go.

The upload I happened to use here is a very easy to understand instruction sheet for a Wasco distributor fixture.
Too bad printed instructions for everything today get mangled in translation.

Welcome aboard Packy. Looks like we worked for Uncle Sam during the same years. USN, '62-'66. On this day, 50 years ago, I well remember hearing the captain of our destroyer filling us in on what had happened. I believe most of the 7th Fleet in S.E. Asia put out to sea and remained at GQ, combate ready, for at least the next 24 hrs. They were some uncertain times for sure.

Like others have already said, put some pictures of that '38 sedan up here when you can. The more early Ford V-8's we see, the better we like it :).
