I am looking at a 1953 flathead from a F600, I am wondering if this would be an engine ok to use in my 27 roadster, can earlier year heads equipment be used on this engine ?
If you decide to use the 337 be prepared to spent BIG money for speed parts as they are RARE,RARE, RARE. Very few speed parts were produced and the guys that have them know what they are worth. Take Ol,Ron's advice to heart. They are super heavy and hard to find parts for. Spend you money on a nice 49-53 flatty or an earlier flatty if you so choose. Your money will go much further and you will avoid tons of frustration and disappointment. As you know those engines were also used in 49-51 Lincolns. This site will help. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_specs-337bigV8.htm
Is this engine that Modeladan has in fact a big block 337? They were in F7/700s and F8/800s. Is the distributer in the front or the rear? Rear is the 337, front is the 239 or 255.
The Y-block was already in use in the 1953 F-700/800 trucks but the 239 flatty was used in all the smaller ones. If it's an EAB 239 L-head flatty then it's like any other of the 8BA family. Earlier heads/equipment will fit the engine but water port preparations have to be performed and a lot of other changes have to be done to use crab distributors and the like.
You might have a good one. Some trucks with the small block had the 4" (Merc 255") crank. And yes older style speed equipment can be used on these. Ol' Ron and Walt are the guys to go to for the specifics of mixing and matching pieces.
