insurance advice?

Grundy and Haggerty both seem good. Prices are real close no big variance.

I think you'll do fine by either one. Have had both no claims on either.

Same here. As long as you have proof of liability you're good to go. I've never had a claim with either but liability is required where I live, Just another freedom taken away.

I switched to Grundy several years ago because of unlimited mileage and they cover a car in the restoration process. Had a friend lose a fan on a tour, took out the radiator and hood. He used AAA towing for 100 miles then had to pay the rest out of pocket. Called Grundy and they paid the overage as part of the tow package they include in the policy. Then they asked him why he had to be towed he explained about the fan breaking. They told him he was covered for the repairs and sent an adjuster. He had started the repair work having removed the hood and radiator by the time the adjuster arrived. They paid him for his work, the paint and repair of the hood fixed the radiator, the only thing that wasn't covered was the broken fan that was his problem. So I keep with Grundy with a claim service like that.

Although I belong to a Model A club it is a 60 mile trip to where they meet so don't often attend or participate in club activities. Most of my driving a year (avg 1500 miles) is just when weather and time permits mostly just "out for a ride". My current insurance policy states an occasional drive outside of club activities is ok. Am I asking for trouble here if I ever have a claim? What insurer would best meet my needs?

My recommendation would be to stay away from J. C. Taylor - great at taking premiums, terrible at paying claims. Un-insured/ under-insured w/Taylor does not apply to property damages!

Hagerty also does all of this. You can take it to a top restoration shop to get the repairs done....or do it yourself and they will pay you.

I changed to Hagerty from JC Taylor in 2004. Taylor had too many restrictions. When I ask them if they would insure my enclosed trailer since it would almost always have a car in it. They refused.

In May while in route to a classic car tour my trailer with my Model A coupe in it was hit in the rear while at a traffic light, the lady was texting. She never hit the brakes.

My trailer was totaled but the Coupe was not damaged. Hagerty paid for the stated value of the trailer very quickly with no problem. Hagerty will continue to be my classic car insurer.

I just got with Hagerty last week. Restrictions will depend on which state you title your car in. My case I can title in Michigan or Tennessee. In Tennessee I can license as a antique automobile or everyday driver same price. Tennessee antique auto plates allow unlimited driving on weekends. Michigan rates are higher and more restrictions.

I did have Hagerty as well and let it expire this fall and I think of going with Grundy. For this same dollar amount coverage it is $10.00 cheaper a year and the towing package seems better as they will pay $250.00 total no matter how or where it is towed.

thanks

As far as insurance goes.....it doesn't matter what the restrictions are on the plates. Also... To the people who think they are getting a good enough deal insuring through your regular car insurance company....everything seems good until you have a claim. They normally treat all cars over 10 years old the same and you will get screwed.

Hagerty fans, I had my '55 Chevy broadsided 10 weeks after i bought it. Hag completely dropped the ball. The closest tow service was in Augusta, Ga. 90 miles from me. Never returned my calls throughout the ordeal. People, check out all alleys with these bums, like where the nearest service center is, will they be there for you if needed. I dropped them like a bad habit and went with American Modern. Thank God the guy that hit me had Farm Bureau, a great company that was with me each and every day throughout the repairs.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I've decided to take the lazy way out and just re-up with Grundy.

Lost my brakes on my Model T Speedster on Memorial Day 2013 and used a tree to come to a stop. I was catapulted out to the left, broke my left knee and a toe; my wife was catapulted out to the right, broke her right foot. Thank the fates that we didn't have safety belts, otherwise I would have put the steering column through my chest and halved my face by the monocle windshield in front of it.

J.C. Taylor paid everything very generously, without much fuss, based on a spread sheet I created, where I outlined what it would have cost to repair the vehicle. That said, I think all major collector car insurances are about equal.

I have been with Hagerty since 1996. I currently have 5 cars insured with them and the only claim was for towing one of my daily drivers that flamed out a couple of weeks ago. The first concern when I called was whether I was in a safe location. They pinpointed my location using my iPhone and it took 35 minutes total to get a flatbed to me. Based on their response and service over the years I plan to do business with them as long as I have antique cars. They even have a guy on staff that knows A Models. He drove one as a daily driver for 365 days (even though Hagerty wouldn't insure it).

I shopped insurance extensively. Went with Hagerty. Mainly because they offer the guaranteed flatbed towing with no out of pocket, and because they do allow use of the car for the occasional trip to the store, out to dinner, etc. They just don't want you using it for work.

Ditto. Common sense approach to Model A use made them my choice too.

Hagerty for many years on various historic and antique vehicles, low premiums and great service. Went for a quote from JC Taylor on my Tudor and they said the car was "rusty" and would not insure.

Two comments, ...

 I'm sure this photo does not encompass the entire scenario but your poor wife is laying there almost in a state shock and those by-standers do not seem to be showing much compassion for her!! I sure hope both of you have recovered from this because not only could the injuries have been traumatic, even the memories of this could haunt either of you for a long time into the future.

One question, you stated that you submitted a spreadsheet of what it would cost to have the vehicle repaired. Was this the costs to have the repairs professionally performed, --or by yourself?
