installing spring shackles

35 coupe

when installing spring shackles, because of the extremly tight fit, should you use any lubricant on the outside or press them in dry. these are going in a stock 35 coupe. Thanks Gary.

Gary, are you planning to use some type of press fixture/tool maybe like the one K.R.W. made, or something similar? A press tool would make the job much easier. I would suggest using some type of lube, maybe a dry lube. The formed sheet metal cans that go over the shackle studs are a very tight press fit going into the spring eyes and the ends of the wishbone/radius rods. To reduce this press fit, some recommend sanding/machining a little material off the OD of the sheet metal can. Doing a real good cleaning of the spring eyes and other shackle mounting diameters is a must. One thing you don't want to do is try to drive those spring shackle studs into their mounting diameters when they are a heavy/tight press fit. The sheet metal cans will distort/mushroom and be ruined. Good luck, J.M.

Thanks, I don't have a press, I tried a deep well socket over the shackle and started pressing in in with a c clamp I just started on one and that was in a spring, the ones i dread are the ones in the rear radius rods.

There is a .003" to .004" press fit designed into these pins.
I use the KR Wilson tool and the pins go in smoothly. Do NOT attempt to pound them in.
Also, sanding them down defeats the purpose of replacing them.
