Installing runningboard trim

I am about to install the runningboard trim on my 28 runningboards. The inside and outside trim (the long pierces) need to be formed or bent around the steel runningboard upright sides. Has anyone found a good method of bending the new zinc trim around the outside especially? It seems like using a hammer to form the trim would leave ripples in the zinc. Would forming the trim first then sliding in onto the runningboards be an option? Any help would be appreciated.

Rusty,

I found this task difficult to do but here is how I approached it. This approach was given to me by Bob Burdick. I took some oak blocks of wood 3 to 4 inches long and cut slots into them of various widths. I think I may have started with a 1/2 inch slot, then 3/8, 1/4, etc. The idea is to use the wood block and then hammer or push against it to begin the turn the trim. Once you get it started you can then hit the end of the oak block and move the bend along the running board. Once you reach the end of the running bored go to next slightly narrow slotted block and do it again. Keep doing until you have the tight bend.

This keeps you from hammering up the trim. It took me a couple of evenings to do this as the trim I have was difficult to bend over. Once you get it started it just takes time.

I hope you get the general idea from this note.
