installing new wheel wells

The wells don't match up to the fender very well so which curve do I go with...the fender or the "new" wells? Also, one end of the well seems wider and flatter. Is there a top and bottom to them?

First of all, what model car are you working on?

On a coupe / roadster, the fender wells dip in toward the bottom front of the car.

Look at Flop's post on metal work. Scroll down to post number 6 to see the fender wells.

I think he is speaking of fender wells for a spare tire. If so, the repro well is not made correctly. I am riding down the road and I don't have pictures on my phone so someone needs to post pix of original installation, -or wait until I get back to the shop to post some pix

Ooohhhh! The question makes more sense to me now! Thanks Brent! :)
I personally don't have any experience with installing fender wells. Sorry.

i had no problems with repro wells.

drill out the old spot welds. get the old pan out. put the new one in and spot weld away.it had a nice fit the whole way around .

Sadly, you are not really comparing apples to apples here as almost anyone can re-install a well. It is when you have nothing to go by, ...and the edges must be tipped properly (i.e.: dimensions, shape, etc.) for the installation to look, AND function correctly. Having to let the air out of the spare to remove it from the well kinda defeats the purpose of having a spare IMO. The repro wells are not the correct length, nor the correct width, and there is a slight crown on both side that are supposed to be there.

.

Brent if its not the correct width or length how come it measured in at a hair over 16th of an inch on all sides measured off the orig pan....very fixable in my opinion. fit on the fender very nicely as well. we will see i have 2 fenders coming up that need wells put in them.then i guess we can compare apples to apples .

I had to let the most of the air out of my tires, guess this is why the had a tire pump in the tool kit. lol. anyway bending the edge in the correct place seems to me the hardest trick, wasn't there a guy who did nothing but this. saw it on a thread about two years ago.

thanks for the help. One of these days I will learn about repops. The R&R went pretty good but not near as good as I had planned. The new one...my heart got ahead of my head. DON"T do this. If you plan on welling a fender...make sure you are very skilled or have a pro do it. I made a poster board mock of the factory well. I figured I could just transfer it over and make it work. Making the flange bends are tough. Spent way too much time playing with this thing for the reward. 20/20 hindsight...thanks for all the input and pictures.
