installing cowl welting

WEll, I finally got my roadster body painted and set back on the frame. I have the cowl on it too, but not bolted in place. Does anyone have any tip on putting the cowl welting on? I assume it goes from the bottom on one side, up and around the back of the gas tank, and down to the bottom of the other side. Then a strip of cloth (friction tape) goes along the bottom of the gas tank where it mounts to the lower cowl. Any advice on making the bend with the welting? Do I cut it (triangle cuts in intervals) to make it follow the contours?

Hi Mike I cut mine with straight cuts almost back to the rib at intervals of around 1 inch this worked good for me around fenders also. Robert DeBord P.S. make sure you have some help it is a two man job to keep from dropping it and scratching your fresh paint!

If you do not have someone to help, you may want to use some painters tape (blue tape) to hold it in place. This stuff does not stick bad to paint and after you get things together and before you bolt it in, you can slip the tape out.

Also I found that after I got the welting in place and bolted it in that in places there was still a crack between the tank and cowl. So you may watch for this to make sure you get a good seal. I didn't and get water through there when it rains.

I installed one earlier this year, and used some weather strip adheasive to hold the welting in place. It went well and has even spacing all around.
