installing columbia in 32

I have a 40 banjo and columbia. plan on using early bell's (32-24). Are the axles long enough to absorb the extra 1/2 inch wider center section? if not should I shorten the bell's by 1/4 each? If I can run the stock bell's do I need longer shackle's?

trike84.......If memory is correct, the actual difference in the width of banjo housings is 5/16". I believe the early is 3 1/2" wide, and the '35-'48 are 3 13/16". Can't answer your specific question without thinking a bit. SEEMS like you'll run into brake drum to backing plate difference of 5/32" on each side. Maybe 5/32" spacers on each side to space backing plates outboard........?

Curious as to why you're going to use the early center section? There's probably going to be more involved, the more you think about it. DD

Many of the parts you are trying to use have small differences in width or length vs. a bone stock 32 rear. My suggestion is to call one of the "Columbia Guys" for advice . Cliff Helling did mine and it's great. He can modify and mix/match your parts with a stock 32 rear so it all bolts in. The other option is to run the 40 Columbia as is but then you will have to modify the rear spring or rear crossmember. That might change your wheelbase slightly because it moves the rear wheels closer to the fronts. Also it may cause an issue if you are using fenders depending on the tire/wheel combo you choose.

any body got an idea on what to use as a replacement for the breather / filter for the vac valve ( silanoid).

The old Mercedes with mechanical fuel injection have a small fast idle air filter that looks very similar to the columbia electric solenoid vent filter, most likely the threads are different---there are 2 different threads on the mercedes, both metric, --this link has picture --it's a little larger than the columbia one---
