Installing 5 bow headliner on a 1949 Ford-insulation?

We have the headliner and wind lace to install on this 1949 5 bow Ford sedan. We notice that some type of insulation was once on the inside of the roof. The bows are so close they touch! Can anyone describe what was once there and perhaps what we should use in it's place?:)

My old 51 Mercury had a yellow colored glass fiber insulation (very much like is used in home construction yet today) that was about 3/4 to 1 inch thick with no compression on it. The Fords probably used something similar.

When I replaced my headliner I used a fiber mat that is used under carpeting (glued in place) It's about a 1/2" thick and worked out perfectly.
As I recall I got it at Home Depot.

My '49 had the waffle-pattren tar paper glued to the inside of the roof with asphalt mastic - it is about 1/8" thick. It is the original insulation.....Bob L
