Installing 36 Pickup bed wooden blocks

I am installing a new bed on my 36 Ford Pickup and don't know which way the two wooden blocks that mount the rear of the bed go in. There weren't any with this truck when I bought it. I hope somebody knows which way they go in.

Here is what I think about this; The block goes with the small end down, the notch goes toward the gas tank as this is the reason for the notch.

I am puzzled about the reason for the notch also. If the notch is positioned toward the front, it will not clear the gas tank filler neck and you cannot pass the bolt through it. This is with an original tank and an original mounting block. True, I have a reproduction bed, (Mac Hils) but all of the other holes line up perfectly so I know that is not the problem.

I know of an original 36PU that has never been apart. I am checking with the owner to see how his is mounted. Oh Henry , where are you when we need help????? lol

Lawsooon

I checked with Henry and he said even He doesn't know. He only looked after the engine side of things (whatever that means)

Signed GOD

Steel35, Thanks for the picture which realy shows the direction of the mounting block and sure answers the question.

That is the only way I can get it to work. This picture is from the right rear and the gas neck is on the left rear, but this way (on the left side) allows the block to miss the filler neck on the tank.

Thanks for the picture.

Lawson now that you have brought up the filler neck! is it indeed a lead washer (seal) under the filler neck?

Thanks a bunch. In my mind, that settles it. Your set up has been confirmed on two original trucks. It just will not work if the notch faces the tank.

I believe the first problem would be the bed hitting the cab because it would be too far forward, but I am not going to test it.
