Installation of engine splash pans

Every time I pick up a set of engine splash pans, the tabs are broke off. Even worse on reproductions. I'm about to install a nice original set on my car and I'm wanting to cheat death on them. Anybody have any tips or cheats on how to better protect the splash pan tabs? Rubber shims or O rings for example.

I installed rubber grommets into six enlarged frame side mounting holes of the pans. Then used a 10-32 bolt, washer, 10-32x1/4" spacer and secured them the frame. All purchased at Home Depot. Got rid of some of the pan rattleing.

I made up all-thread studs for the block. With nuts hold the oil pan with first nut and using copper washer each side of engine pan tab hold engine pan with second nut. 1/4-20 hardware.

IMO how they should have been mounted in the first place. Didn't use copper washers but just how I did mine.

Any of you guys have pictures? I'm having a hard time visualizing all this. I just got new Brookville pans yesterday, and haven't yet even looked at how they fit up.

Carl, I just fitted mine up last night to see how they will fit before I paint them.
Looks like 3 bolts on the underside of the frame and 2 at the oil pan. I will have to remove 2 of the oil pan bolts on each side of the car for final install. therefore I understand what John and Tin cup are saying about installing studs in the holes at the oil pan. This way you can remove the splash pans without loosening the oil pan bolt all the time.

Keep in mind the splash pans are also the ground path from the engine to frame. Keep a little of the bolt areas clear of paint for best ground.

Agree- I'm bad at visualizing this too- pic would be helpful

OK, I can understand this part, but what was Downeaster saying about grommets?

If all original as in Fine Point, yes.

Otherwise it makes more sense to me to install an additional ground cable. Mine is installed across the driver's side motor mount using an existing frame hole and the bottom starter bolt. Inobtrusive and effective.

Joe,
Can not have too many ground straps! Look at cars as they progressed..more/more ground straps..good idea!

Rusty: if you look in the JS, it shows four different splash pans, changes made over the years. The reproduction is a generic one that fits all years and body styles
