Infrared thermometer recommendations

Looking for infrared thermometer recommendations. Besides checking the usual bloc, head, coolant, tailpipe, also want to see if a basic motormeter red line length can be usefully linked to coolant temp. Thanks, Hoffman (1931 Town Sedan w/ Sch. Rebuilt)

I got one of these a couple of years ago. Seems to do the job.

The new motometers are useless for reading the coolant temperature. I am pretty sure that the old ones were calibrated differently. The new motormeters will tell you if you are boiling over only.

If you are just looking to check the accuracy of the MotoMeter grab the wife's meat thermometer and stick it in the hot water.
Or get a new one at Target $6

i bought a infrared thermometer from amazon 4 years ago and it works great and is still going strong. dono the brand, was cheap.

like the fellow above said, harbor freight will be your ticket. we don't have HF in the frozen north.

Shell out some more money and get a thermal imaging camera. That will visually show you where the high and where the low temperatures are located on whatever you point it. It is also great for showing where you need more insulation on your house walls, around your car body, on the radiator, around your doors, on your roof, etc, etc, etc....).

I have this one from Amazon which I am quite happy with. It is worth it to pay a little more for a higher resolution thermal camera image.

The only criteria I have is no 9 volt battery. They are hard to change and I never have one in stock. The ones that use AA batteries work fine. That thermal energy one is neat.

The primary difference between the various infrared thermometers being sold is their level of accuracy in reading temperature. In general, the higher price imagers have greater resolution. If you are only going to check for general temperature differences the less expensive units will do the job. I agree with nkaminar that using an infrared gauge to calibrate your motometer will not work.

Thankyou to all that responded. Going with. 1400+F, and will use wife’s meat thermometer. Carefully of course.

I got a Horrible Fright infrared thermometer to check for cooling system issues. It seemed to work fine to measure relative differences (hot vs not as hot areas). I checked it against several containers of boiling water and found it was way off the actual temperature. I don’t know about others but the HF unit cannot be calibrated by the user. I suspect its accuracy may degrade as the battery wears down.

These work on refraction, opposite of reflection. Reading water for example can’t be done. Another thing is model A’s have a LOT of electrictromatic interference, so getting to close to a running engine will damage the gun. I actually ruined one and almost the second one, before I figured that out.
