The letter L is often the designation put on a radiator made by Long, one of Ford's radiator suppliers.

Service replacement from Ford. Not factory installed like that.
Should be split core and have the cap on the angle (end).

Its the exact same radiator as my 41 pickup that looked to be an original complete with part numbers. Tim

Not sure what they did at the factory in '41. However, the original post referenced 1940. In 1940, the pickup radiator was identical to the passenger car.

Good call Mike, and in addition to that, it appears that this was a recore, placing a crank hole smack in the middle of the center tube, which would of course be soldered closed.

Alan,
I think a lot of folks would like to believe their vehicles are pretty much as they were when they left the factory.
You and I have witnessed a LOT of vehicles where the owner insists "that's the way it was when I bought it in 1965".
Um, okay, what that means to me is that by 1965 that 1940 Ford was worth next to zero and after twenty-five years, it had been repaired many times.

I have attached a photo of a properly restored and concourse correct radiator for the original poster's benefit.
