Have a B motor in looking at and it’s dated December 1931 . Vin is AB5001936 . Everything I read says production started in March of 1932. Can’t find anything with AB vin#
Thanks The Tick

If you like 1932 Fords, March, 1932 is certainly a milestone month to remember. On the 7th of the month, the first V8 engine deemed sufficiently worthy of powering a production vehicle was manufactured. It was the 243rd attempt. On the 10th, that engine was stamped 18-1 by Mr. Henry Ford and installed in a production chassis with a Victoria body and that combination constituted Job #1 at the Dearborn Assembly Plant. All of that was the result of the decision made not to produce any new vehicles until the V8 engine was developed sufficiently to start installing them in vehicle production. So firm was that decision that the pace of V8 engine production dictated the pace of vehicle production and no passenger cars were produced with four-cylinder engines until well into April.

But where were the Model B engines all that time? After all, the changes to the Model A engine design weren't that earthshaking or extensive. Where they were was in a big warehouse somewhere on the Rouge site and elsewhere at the various other assembly plants as production of Model B engines commenced way back on November 25, 1931 and nearly 40,000 of them had been produced before the first of them was installed in a vehicle chassis. (Imagine the various warehouses near the assembly plants around the country bursting at the seams with that many engine/transmission assemblies.)

As for the U.S. numbering of the Model B engines, they weren't actually numbered, unlike the Model A engines, but rather their flywheel housings carried their numbers. And the initial engine number prefix was indeed "AB" or "ABB" for those destined for big truck chassis. In fact, those prefixes remained in use until engine number 5062387 when the A was dropped and from then on the prefix was simply B or BB.

The Rouge Engine Plant gave the Dagenham, England Engine Plant blocks of four-cylinder numbers from its sequence with either the AB or B prefix. The Ford of Canada- manufactured fours had their own unique letter prefixes and groups of numbers with limited numbers of engines in each group.
