Indentification Numbers

Look just up from the steering column just above the lip where the bottom front edge of the gas tank is screwed to the firewall and you should see a date stamp, such as 2-27-29. Let us know what it reads.

If your engine number is correct, which it may well be, then you ****** cover should have the parking brake in front of the shifter and it should be the push button style.

What is the gas tank date? It is located in the bottom left corner of the tank itself on the firewall side of the car. It is just above where the steering column goes inside the body.

Not on the intermediate peice but the tank...should be visable if there...sometimes.

These '28 & '29 'Leather back' / 'steel back's are Briggs built Sedans. This is more common leather back one with fabric gone .
This looks a very good & original car, maybe early '29 ; hopefully woodwork is not too bad.

Looks like an early 1929 60-B leatherback to me also, providing the top material is original. Itcould also be a 1928 60-A that was recovered with the wrong color of top material. Rod

Mike,

If you can find the gas tank date, let us on the fourm know.

Do your research on this BEFORE you really start taking things apart.

Get a copy of the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards to really start to ID things you have and may need. Also get a copies of Les Andrew's books. Great resource there. And join a national and local Model A Club...YOU WILL NOT REGREAT IT!

Take plenty of pictures as you go along...it will mean that mush more to you in the end.

Do not get discouraged and drop the project, were here to help you.

Take a damn good look at the wood in this body style, this is important because you sure do not want to go back later and fix it.

Do it right the first time so you do not have to worry about it later OR as they say..."You can pay me now or pay me later"!

The gas tank date is on the vertical part, just above the horizontal lip.

Thanks for the pic Tom; will take a look for mine at lunch time.

How reliable is this stamp in dating the vehicle ? ( At what point in production was this date stamped into the tank? )

SC Frank,

WE THINK it was put on at the time the tank was assembled and built, maybe after it was even tested, at Dearborn. Sometimes, I say sometimes, the date and the engine build date are the same on the car itself but not always.

I think once these two items were shipped to the various assembly plants it was the luck of the draw. Even at Dearborn where the cars and trucks were made also.

However a majority of the time the two dates did not correspond to the assembly of the vehicle.

Isn't it true that the '28s had a brown top material and the '29s a black? I believe that the stitched patterns on the door trim panels were different on the two. Odds are better that it's a '29.
