I'm stumped.

Tried to remove my 36 trans from my 59A, and the trans main shaft is frozen in the clutch plate. The trans will pull away about 3/16" and stop. I tried turning the engine and judiciously tapping the clutch plate boss with a long drift through the inspection hole, but I'm concerned to hit it too hard.
Anyone struck this before? They've only been together about a year.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm sounds like maybe the pilot bearing or bushing has frozen on to the input shaft & may be pulling out of the flywheel & then stopping once it hits the clutch plate. you may have to pull the pan & unbolt the pressure plate .
Just a guess !

Yeah, I encountered that a while back; if you're running a 9" clutch you can undo the pressure plate bolts through the inspection hole and remove the whole kaboodle, however, I'll bet you're running one of those bigger clutches, in which case you'll need to proceed in the manner Tony has said. like brian says if it a 9 " clutch you can get the bolts through the inspt. plate if it has the 36 resesed flywheel removeing the oil pan woun,t help.

Yes recieved them

Thanks for the ideas... I never thought of the pilot bearing causing it.
Kiwi... I hope your Mum's gonna be OK.

I had something similar happen a few years back. After taking the transmission bolts out, I could only get the transmission to move away from the engine bell housing (59ab) a fraction of an inch. I can't remember exactly how I did it, but somehow I removed the six pressure plate bolts from the flywheel and the transmission separated from the engine with the splined hub on the clutch plate frozen to the splines on the input shaft. I had one "helluva" time getting them apart. I had to break the clutch disc away from the splined hub, somehow rig up a puller, an heat the splined hub with a torch to get them apart. The throw out bearing was not stuck to the input shaft, only the splined hub of the clutch plate

on my 39 ****** tried to hook up to 8BA with 10" clutch setup; new clutch disk. could only force ****** into clutch 1/2 way then stuck allmost didnt get it back out....Ater 2 hours jerking it in and out i finally admitted i had a problem. i got an old clutch disk and it was tight at 1/2 way onto ****** input shaft so i know ****** input shaft is the problem...shaft had no visible scars nor rough edges on splines...i tried dressing it anyway with diamond koted file...no help. finally i used the old clutch disk with valve grinding compound applied to open up clearance on splines...then a very thourough cleaning....that is the fix in my case...i suspect the input shaft on the ****** is a old non-ford bootleg part with a very slight spline misalignment...you gotta do what you gotta do....

bassman ive got afully recon 8ba with all the geaer on it its now 265ci if you know anyone looking for engine :)
