ignition switch detents??

need some advice on the ign sw set up on a 39 car. when I removed the plug the only part in the hole was the spring. I noticed 2 slots on the switch barrel and decided ford had incorporated a detent to hold the switch in the on or off position. I may be all wet on this. however , If someone can tell me what the part(missing) that the spring is supposed to work with I would be grarteful.

there is supposed to be a small metal ball in ahead of the spring.

check for small ball bearings at local hardware store.I bought a few sizes and found the best one for me.Had the same part missing on mine.

Steel ball bearing with the same OD as the ID of the hole in the cap for the spring.
