ignition question

I recently removed my amp meter, removed the wires made a new wire across the two posts. Starts now and runs. I now notice that I get voltage on both sides of the coil when not running and the key off. Was it that way before ? I was just wondering about the points burning up or am I missing something !!

If the points are open OR the ignition switch is OFF, you will have battery voltage on both sides of the coil. If ign switch is ON (closed) AND the points are closed, you will have battery on one side of the coil, and ground on the other. You should get yourself a wiring diagram. They are all over the internet.
