Ignition lock/key

What is the best way to remove an ignition lock from the column drop of a 46 Ford. Also, who might have the best new replacement part? Thanks for any response :)

Leon Rowell for all things lock and key. 641-623-1957. Great work at reasonable rates and turn arounds.

I need to remove a 40 drop lock. I am going to drill and tap the lock pin and I hope to pull it out with a screw in the threads.

Andy has hit the nail on the head, just do not drill in too far only need about 4 or 5 full turns with the screw used to pull the lock pin. Once the cylinder is removed there is a key code on the side send the cylinder to Leon as Lawson suggested above. The same key for the ignition should unlock the door, so send both to Leon for a pair of keys, or at least evaluation of condition.

I got it out. I put a spacer on the screw and used a nut to pull the pin out. The lock is still not movable so that is the next project.

Drill and tap (8-32?) to remove the plug. Then the cylinder will pull out.

Then tap the existing hole (forgot the tap size) and cut and slot a bolt to go in and hold the cylinder in. Now if a car thief knows what you have done, he just needs a screwdriver to remove the plug and hotwire to drive off in your car. Slim chance.

Thanks everyone for the info.......I remember when I was a kid I owned a 47 and never did have a key for it. A piece of tin foil did the trick behind the key. I think I can now drill out the old lock and get a new one.....
THANKS AGAIN !

If you don't drill it too deep when you drill and tap the retaining pin to remove it, you shouldn't need a new one. Like Terry said above, once you get the lock cylinder out there will be a code number on the side of it and I, or one of the other locksmiths on the board can cut you a key from that code number.

I drilled a hole in the plug, used a sheet metal screw and some end cutters to get the old plug out. I drilled and tapped the drop and found some set screws with an allen head to put in the plugs place.

Re key your old lock or get it fixed, the repos are HORRIBLE. I was looking for an NOS one when I found a good lock smith close to home.

I"ve got two drops I'm messing with.
One, the lock cylinder is completely out but I can't get the pushbutton to budge.
The other one has a busted off key in it that seems loose but I can't get it to come out. I'm hoping if I can get the key out the second drop will be functional.
