i have a 46 mercury with key broke off in cylinder, under the cylinder there are two (looks like pins)one is about 1/16"od and the other is about 1/4"od. are they threaded or pressed in pins? my question is how do i remove the lock cylinder. is there a step by step procedure ? thank you

The 1/4 " pin is pressed in to hold the lock. You can use a drill to drill into it. Be sure the drill is smaller than the pin and go slow. You can put a screw or pick in the hole you drillrd to pull it out. The lock will then come out. To put it back in you can tap the hole and put an allen head plug in it.

Contact 32phil on here, he's our resident lock expert. I believe currently he's in Florida enjoying the warm weather.

Follow these instructions.

Once the tumbler is out the piece can probably be poked out, and usually the key number is stamped, a new key can be made
I have drilled and tapped the pin and pulled it out reusable

Take a coping saw blade and grind the "teeth" off flush on one side, then ease it into the lock, beside the broken key, with the "teeth" facing toward the broken off key, then pull on the saw blade and it will bite into the key and pull it out. Works for me.

Slick idea! Thanks Lawson.

ok gents, did all you told me to do and it worked fine with some persuasion and juice the cylinder came out. could not get the key out so i took it to a local locksmith and he got the key out and made 2 new key for me.i think the reason the key broke was because the lock shaft was frozen.after juicing with liquid wrench and tapping back and forth it came loose.so now that it is all back together and with the switch in off position is the key turned counter clockwise to unlock and the column and clockwise to lock the column?? thanks again
