Ignition- Electronic vs High Energy ????

Richard,
Thats what I was thinking about doing, mostly to keep it out of sight but as you said, it stays out of the weather and heat too. I was also considering moving the coil inside, I had moved it over to the driver's side inner fender to get it away from the engine heat. It gets pretty hot here in the summer and I like to drive my car to events that are sometimes several hundred miles away.

I have been running electronic ignitions for about 20+ years and have had zero problems. However, I also went to an alternator at the suggestion of some friends and I have to assume it is the reason why I have not had a failure of the module. I have heard that generators put out dirty power and that the electronic ignition is susceptible to dirty power and can cause blown modules. I'm sure Bubba has some views on this. If you look at the ignition system in your daily grocery getter, it has been running an electronic ignition for years with no problem and it has an alternator.

I have a generator and use a 12v petronics unit. The coil requires an external resister, in series with the coil... AND as my coils resistance is too low for the petronics unit, another resister - can't remember how, but it's used to increase the resistance across the coil- as a separate issue. This has worked very well. My theory is that the resister cuts out the voltage spikes.

So, I have been thinking about a zenier diode, this grounds out the voltage spikes. This would go on the positive side of the coil. -- Learned about these while working on British motorcycles about forty years ago.

Has anyone used a zenier diode in this fashion??

Keep in mind that any MSD or similar box does NOT have to be under the hood where evil high temperatures can shorten its life.

I put my Crane box and a simple get-home HEI module under by '53 dash where it stays nice and cool and dry. The switches let me change over in a second. So far, I haven't needed to.

Same here - on both of mine they are under the dash.

Still goin.....
