If you were young

If you wer back in the late 5o's to 60's, with availability and prices. what would you build?

I would build a 57 Ford with E code 312. 240+ Hp in the late 50's would see most eating dust.
How can you beat that car unless you go for the supercharged F code.
Regards

Funny about that - In 1967 I chose a 1955 T-Bird, 292 cu. in, all electric options, PB, PS, auto trans, Snowshoe white exterior, red/white interior. Still have the car... BUT, if I had it to do over again - '55 Bird, electric seat only, 3spd OD, Raven Black, with black/white, interior, limited slip diff...

If you're meaning price and parts availability not being an issue, I'd probably go with a '60 (preferred) or '61 Starliner bigblock, as NASCAR-ish as possible but street legal.

I wouldn't build anything. If it were 1968 I would buy a brand new KR500, a Hemi Cuda, and a Baldwin Camaro and then store them away. Then when they hit their peak value 5-6 years ago, sell them, and I would be comfortably retired now!

A low mileage bone stock 1940 Ford Standard Coupe, just like my daily driver that I drove to college in 1963-1965. Reliable, handled nicely, and it always was pleasing to my eye.

I wish I had my 1969 Dodge Super Bee again ! It was Yellow with black interior with the famous Bumble Bee black stripe across the rear quarters and trunk . I bought it used from the original owner I knew for $300 in 1974 . It had 76,000 mile on the clock back then . I had it for about 5 years . I did a lot of street racing with that car and did very well $$ wise with it . It had 107,000 very hard original miles on it when I sold it . I sold the car for $300 in 1979 due to many complaints from the wife because of drag racing that car . I just couldn't make her happy owning the car no matter where I raced it even at the drag track so I sold it ! :( So about 6 months later of her still bit**ing at me all the time I got rid of her too ! :) I did re-marry in 1983 to a great car lady and we have been very happy for the last 29 years with no complaints at all about my old cars and the gasser I am going to build ! She also enjoys the car shows and swap meets too ! :D

OK , if I had the money to buy and build what I really wanted back then , I would have bought and built a FED with a blown Hemi between the front rails hands down ! I have always loved the FED more than any car I ever wanted to own to drag race ! My second favorite was a gasser . Well I will get to own a gasser next winter . I have a 1950 Ford tudor that I am going to build into a real gasser ! YES it will be powered by a 1970 Ford 429 ! I have a 4 speed close ratio toploader for it and I will have a Ford 9" rear with 4.88 gears . It will look just like one you would have seen in the pages of Hot Rod back in the early 1970's ! That will probably be my last dream car to build but you just never know . I might just get that blown FED still one day ! ;)

The 1954 Ford Victoria glasstop I once had would be a good base only instead of the 312 it had that always had a leaking rear main it would have a 1964 427 dual quad with a 4 speed top loader.I always had a soft spot for my 1963 Chevy Nova SS it had a built to the hilt 302 small block, but I'm back in Ford Country.

i was just about to post a similar question....money no object:
1956 pink & white Crown Vic and 1956 Lincoln Premiere Convert Lilac color....the two cars I saw down in GA at some collector guy's house ( think his name was Bobie) off the interstate where my dad bought his 40 ford conv & my uncle got a 48 merc --the guy had a collection of mint and not so mint cars. Those were the two I wanted, but at the time (mid 80s) i didn't have $5K and $6k respectively. DANGITALL if I had been able to buy them, they'd probably be worth 10 times that now.
A 57 Pontiac Super Chief Wagon

also a garage to house them all!

those and I'd like a Bentley Continental FlyingSpur Speed (any year)

Aint gonna happen. Rebuilt this Fairlane in '84 after having drove it for ten years, (still driving it daily). Also did a body off-frame resto of a '55 Ford Courier wagon 1996-2000.
I AM DONE !

I'd lke my 56 Merc. Montclair hardtop in white and glamour tan like I had in 1959 which I foolishly traded for a VW beetle. I thought the 312 was too hungry and that's when gas was 35 cents a gallon. What a car that Merc. was!
