Identifying a V8

Stretch Cab

I have a flat head that I bought in Mexico. I was rolling it onto a dolly today and saw on the drivers side an upside down 44 in a kind of oval, kind of cast in badge on the side about in the middle of the block. Not that I've looked at a lot of V8's but don't remember seeing the 44 before. Is this normal and I need to get out more or what? Thanks.............

21 or 24 stud? Cast in bellhousing or removeable type? Conventional distributor or front (cam) mount?

Ok, here are some pictures. Didn't count the studs, not sure if you can in the pictures. The distributor is not in the front. I was told that it is a 1948 motor but I'm not sure. I'm just learning and getting started on this project. I have the rebuild books that should help tell me the year of the motor but the 44 on the side is a new one to me. Unimportant question but a mystery to me.

looks like a 49 8BA , ford or merc depending on the crankshaft inside, 49 because of the narrow belt cast pulley visible, no "built in" bell housing, 44 number is a casting mould ID,or a shift number, most other casting numbers are stamped into the intake mounting area of the block, look at the crank and see what size plugs are in the clean outs on the throws and let us kow

Looks like the heads are off.
You don't need to open it any further than that to measure the stroke.
Just check the piston depth at BDC then spin it over to tdc and check the depth again.
The difference in depths would be the stroke.
