Identify Distributor?

I am trying to figure out what this distributor is....
We're working on collecting parts for the restoration of an antique racecar and this is somewhat stumping me... I'm sorry the photo is not great... I tried to blow it up the best that I could...
(click on attachment at bottom)

It appears to stick pretty far off the front of the block... and the wires go into the end... not the side like a crab cap...
Theres a coil on the intake... so its not a magneto... could be a 2nd coil behind it... hard to tell....

Also... looks like script Edelbrock heads to me... anyone disagree?

Also... this is 1965 I believe....

thanks for any help
Zach

Looks like it might be a setup using Wico 4 cylinder (tractor) magnetos. There were some commercially available adaptors to mount two of them on an 8 cyl engine.

Where's Bubba when you need him?????? (Working, I'd guess)

Thanks Henry... the coil on the intake means its a regular ignition... not magnetos as they wouldn't need them...

thanks
Zach

Love it , the distributor looks like a old packard eight. Could be anything you wanted to drive off the from cam drive etc.
Put me down a a sponsor for the build, i can make up just about anything to fit the cover as it looks like you have tons of room...
Based on cam drive it would need to be a early mallory, gm etc that was counter clockwise rotation.
Of corse a regular crab would work very weel but maybe you want someting cooler looking.
Let me know when you jig up the engine etc....

Thanks Bubba,
We're going to try to make it look as exact as possible to the photos when restoring it... so your thinking its just a home made plate and then the end of the distributor shaft ground to have a blade which runs right off the cam?

Is there any advantage to the Packard 8 distributor? dual coil? etc?

thanks alot!!
Zach

Bubba,
found this on the HAMB that you built...
This looks like it might be correct?

What did this start as? are they available???

Seems like you could adapt to run straight off the cam without a ton of effort....

thank you!

I have a front mount that is probably a relative of that...similar huge dual coil iron distributor, set into the aluminum rear part of a cut-off Ford distributor for direct drive on 3-bolt cover. I doubt I could find it anytime soon...deeply buried in my basement. FWIW, it is black like that one, the one you are chasing is brown. But anywy, mine gives an example of what you are thinking about.

Very nice project !! Are you truly restoring it as she was or rebuilding it to race. There are a few groups out there still racing these ole cars with the flatheads. We restored ours as she raced in 1960. Down here we had 3 basic classes of race cars back then. The A-Modifieds or Super Modifieds had very few rules on motor, body and fuel. The B-Modifieds or Sportsman had some restrictions. The C-Modified or Hidden Modified had to “appear” stock. Ours was a C-Modified.

That dist remines of my stock car back in 64. I was running a Chrysler Spitfire 6, bore .125 Chevy pistons, dual carbs, split headers, cut the cam in the middle and turned one end around 180* and welder it back together in the block. Found a marine dist (don't know what it came out of) 12 dist towers 2 coil towers dual points, dual coils. I made it fit the Chrysler, used 6 dist towers and grounder the other six. Fired 2 cyl to once, 1-6 2-5 3-4 , It's funny how much engery you have when your 24. Walt

Thats "du-coil" distributor machined from a chevrolet core. use twin ignition coils and works really well...kinda hard to find but would look mean hanging out the front....

thanks everyone... The plan for the car will be to restore it back to as close as possible to how it was when it was originally built for the 1965 season...

Then from there.. run it with the old timers group locally www.emmr.org
They don't "race" but you can run it pretty hard if you want to when they travel to the local tracks...

The plan is always to make it as close to how it originally was so thats its really like you went back in time and had a chance to drive it....

thanks alot
Zach
