Identify carburetor v8-60

Hello
I have a 1937 v8-60 and I am trying to identify my carburetor. The car is a 60 hp 1937 model but the engine could be a 1938 as far as I know. I want to do a service on the carburetor this winter and I will buy a service kit. To do that, I need to know what type I have. I have done my homework and found out that these engines was originally equipped with the Stromberg 81 and it should have a "81" mark on the side. But I cant find any marks on my carburetor at all? Can anybody help me identify this carburetor?
The engine runs fine but it runs very rich. The spark plugs get very black and the exhaust also leaves black spots on the pavement when idling. So I suspect someone perhaps have installed a 85 hp carburetor...

Judging by the cast aluminum base, I'd surmise that that is one of those Speedway, or similar, knock off 97's.

The Stromberg 81 is very hard to find and it would have the 81 on the side of the carb body. There's two differences with the Speedway knock off carb that I have seen. First the throttle linkage / accelerator pump arm is held to the shaft with a screw the other difference is the base is aluminum.

The Stromberg arm is pressed and sweged on and the base is a metal casting not sure if its steel or iron.
To help you further I measured the throttle bore diameter of the Stromberg 81 it measures 1.060 the Stromberg 97 measures 1.180.

Thank you for kind help :-)
I have not tried to adjust my carb leaner. Is it possible to use a 97 on the 60 hp or will it always "drown" the engine and make it go rich like mine?

I believe a real Stromberg would also have the name and patent information on the side of the bowl.

Installing a larger air flow carb does not make it more rich.
I'm pretty sure Stromberg in England makes a new 81 replacement carb.
Probably pretty pricey. Uncle Max on this forum is an authorized Stromberg dealer and rebuilder. He should be able to help you out.

It might work if you replace the jets with smaller ones. How small the main jet can be before the carb is now to lean however is a mystery to me. If you decide to just go with the smaller Stromberg 81 carb I have some. Send me PM for more information.

Thank you again!
I think I will try first to locate a 81model here in Norway. The hunt for parts are a fun part of the game:-)
But I have one more question. What about the fuel pump, do I need to replace that to if I swap for a Stromberg 81? The picture show that I have a glas bowl type. Do the Stromberg 81 demand a 60 hp fuelpump or can I just use the one I already have?

You are in Norway ! I am in France and 81's are relatively easy to find. The French 81's have 22.2 embossed on the side. Here are pic of what they look like. All parts are interchangeable. The choke kicker and butterfly shaft on some will have to be changed out .Those parts are available from Srtomberg UK. They do make an 81 but they are sleeved from a 97 down to 81 specs.

If the carburetor that you have has an embossed 31 / 32 on the passenger side of the fuel bowl, it is a Stromberg 97 aftermarket carburetor from years ago. They were available over the counter from auto parts stores. If the embossing is 1, 1 / 32 it is a Stromberg model 40, or 48 carburetor. these were also available over the counter at auto parts stores.
