what automatic transmission did Ford use in the 1962/63 Thunderbird with 390 engine w/4bbl???? I remember cruise-o-matics and then C4 or C-6 in the 70's, but what about early 60's behind the 390????
Thanks for any info.

The 390-4 barrel 1962/63 T-Birds came with the Cruise-O-Matic. The transmission code is "4" - It should be there on the data plate. Check out: www.tbird.org

Cruise-o-matics were 3 speed automatic transmissions and transitioned into a trade name. C4, C6, FMX were also Cruise-o-matics but were seperate versions of the original 3 speed auto concept. Trade name dropped with the introduction of the AOD. C4 1964, C6 1966 , FMX 1968-9

I think there was also an "MX" automatic, not sure what year(s). Also, I think Ford used a Borg Warner automatic of some sort, maybe early 70s?

i have a cruise o matic if anyone is interested its cond is unknown, its complete w/alum bell ,converter,it was behind a 76 302...$75 takes it all located on long island ..ny 11967 pm if interested

A C6 has the bell housing cast on. A C4 has an aluminum bell housing bolted on an aluminum case. An FMX/Cruisomatic has a cast iron case with a bolt on bell housing.

The original cruise-o-matics werre identified by MX and FX, larger and smaler. There was also a C3, light duty version of the C4 and a C5 that was a C4 with a lockup converter. They were all called Cruise-o-matics.

Mercury and Edsel both had their own identifying names. Should be an MX cruise-o-matic in your car.

OK, thanks for all the feedback My 63 Thunderbird trans must be the FX/Cruise-o-matic , cause its got the cast iron case and it's bolted to an aluminum bell. Appreciate all the help.
