Identifing a Mercury

How do you tell the difference between 46 / 47 / 48 Mercury's? I know how to ID the same year Fords, but my friend's Merc is titled as a 48. It's exactly the same as a 46 I owned a few years ago. Parking lights are above the grill, any help out there? Thanks in advance.

Might post a photo.

In as much as just about all parts are interchangeable between the years, who know what parts have been replaced in the decades after it was manufactured.

Easiest way usually is the 46 ( and probably early 47 ) had a full length stainless strip along each side of the hood.
For later 47 and 48 it was replaced with a real short piece and another short piece with Mercury stamped into it.
Also on the early ones there are 3 strips either side of the grill surround which is painted.
That grille surround is chromed on the later ones.
The early ones have a nicer steering wheel also.

SwoopNZ has it right, also the '48s had a key off & on switch instead of a toggle off & on switch & probably an aluminum floor board & aluminum running boards.
