This is advertized as a 38 Deluxe, but mine doesn't have the horizontal stainless strips. Did some 38 models have this feature? Looks correct otherwise. Thanks.

Grills are the same, but the 8 stainless strips indicate 39. Weld up the (stainless) holes and you're good. Also, the center spear is different between 38-39. Someone with a 39 will probably be interested in the strips. Paul Selfe.

When I do a Bing image search for Ford 1939 Standard I get plenty of pictures with the grille that includes the stainless strips. Thanks guys you nailed it.

I still hold to 1938 standard. The 1939 standard did not have the 2 vertical stainless trim strips nor a provisional bulge at the bottom to hold them. Also the 1938 has the horizontal trim in pairs where the 1939 only has the horizontal trim in single locations. The 1938 grill has 20 grill bars not including the top frame. The 1939 has 25.

Roadster36, the grille in your photo on the right has 26 horizontal bars which is exactly what the one on my car has. The grille in my original post has fewer bars. I've included a photo of my slightly tweaked grille that I'm looking to replace. Looks like I need to keep looking.

I picked up this NOS 38 Deluxe "right" half for $40 on eBay. My new center trim piece fits perfectly. Anyone have a left half lying around they want to get rid of? Thanks for steering me straight. I also let the guy know what he had on that first picture.

This "mystery" Grille is definitely from a 1938 Ford Standard. Notice the Twin Chrome Trim Strips that were added after the release of these models, in an effort to make them look better. Other models Grilles didn't get Twin Chrome Strips.

Just for the record, this is what the Grille from a 1939 Ford Standard looks like.
Notice that the Chrome Strips are only Single, not Double. The Grille in question is definitely off a 1938 Ford Standard.

I am convinced that you are right. On your photo of the red 38 standard you can see the upper corner cuts "down" where it meets the hood side, which is another giveaway besides the double row of stainless strips. Thanks all!

The Late 38 Standards {after January 1938 } had the two chrome strips as in the "mercmans from oz," post. These cars also had chrome windshield frames and the little clips to hide where the frames butt together, about 3/4 of the way down, on the windshield frame. The early 38 standard had painted windshields, the little clips in the middle of the windshield frames, and no chrome strips on the grill ......per 38/39 Ford book

I had previously sent in a photo of the updated 1938 Ford Standard grille with had the Chrome Trim added to help with sales.
This black 1938 Ford is a very early model & lacks all Chrome Trim, & in fact has a full length Pin stripe.
The updated models got a full length Chrome Trim in addition to the extra trim on the grille.
It does look kind of dull when you compare it with the Red Car, with the extra Chrome Trim.
To make viewing easier, I have reattached the earlier photo of the grille of the Red car, so that it is easy to compare both early (black) & late (red) 1938 Ford Standards.
